Reading and Writing Connection with Arizona’s History Dr. Clinton Hart Merriam had to keep detailed notes about the plants and animals he found and studied on the San Francisco Peaks near Flagstaff, Arizona. He kept those notes in a journal so that he could look back after several weeks or even several years and remember what he saw and learned. Keep a journal about your daily activities at school. Make an entry to your journal every 45 minutes. Put your journal away and do not look at it for one week. When one week has passed, take out your journal and read it again. Did it help you remember things that you did? Why do people write journals? An ancient petrified tree is supported by concrete as it spans a wash at the Petrified Forest National Park.
