What changes did the newcomers bring with them? The Spanish and the American settlers tried to change the way the Indian people dressed and the type of homes they lived in. They occupied land that the Indians considered to be theirs. They tried to make the Indian people learn and live within the Spanish and American cultures. The newcomers’ idea of owning land was new to the Indians. Many Indians felt that their people were part of the land, not that they owned it. This idea caused much conflict with the Indians. Ideas, like people, are in conflict when they do not agree. Some of the changes were helpful to the Indians. The Spanish and American settlers brought new foods, horses, and improved farming methods.
