Micromanipulators are used when precision work is conducted under a microscope. A micropipette, electrode or probe can be mounted on a micromanipulator and move as little as a micron at a time. This tool can be used for in vitro fertilization, patch clamp experimentation, extracellular recording, microinjection and any application requiring fine mechanical placement (resolution). In addition to micromanipulators, WPI offers tilt bases, piezo translators and a variety of stands. Micromanipulators can be broken out into three broad categories: Manual, Manual/Motorized and Motorized. M ICROMAN I PU LATORS Manual Micromanipulators M3301 is a popular, high-quality manual micromanipulator. Weighing just 550g, the x-axis allows for 10µm resolution. Control knobs for all three axes are aligned in a single plane, protruding from the back of the instrument for exceptional control in tight spaces. The KITE is the economy version of the M3301. The KITE HS6 is a high precision micromanipulator built on a 12 pound steel plate. With 5µm resolution and 25mm of travel on all three axes, it has 20 times greater resolution than the M3301. The HS6 is a high end manual micromanipulator. Manual/Motorized Micromanipulators The DC3001 is the popular, DC3301 high-precision manual/motorized micromanipulator. With 0.5µm resolution, it can be used with an optional joystick or an MS314 controller. (When sold with a controller, it is a SYS-DC3314) While it can be mounted on the TBS, it is too heavy to mount on the M3 tilt base. When performing intracellular microinjection, the DC3001 can be used with the MPM10 or MPM20 piezo translators. HS6-3 Best r Selle M3301 HS6 Best r Selle Other manual micromanipulators include: • MMJ–Includes a joystick for a variety of movements. • MD4–Holds two electrodes on a common axis when you want to record from two electrodes in a differential application or when you want a reference electrode in close proximity to the recording electrode. • M325–Can be configured for left or right hand use. With 10µm resolution, it can carry loads up to 1kg. It can clamp onto horizontal or vertical rods 10–12.7mm ∅. M325 MD4 MMJ The HS6-3 must be used with a high resolution microscope. It includes manual controls and a stepper motor that can be controlled with a joystick, keyboard, mouse or computer. It has 10nm resolution and can remember 999 positions coordinates. It uses the same controller and programmable software as the SM325 (MCL3). Motorized Micromanipulators The SM325 is high end of the WPI line of micromanipulators. It boasts of 40,000 steps/revolution with 25nm/step and 25mm travel. It tilts up to 90º and can be controlled using a joystick, keyboard, mouse or computer using the MCL3 controller. SM325 The mini micropositioners are also popular. While they can be purchased separately for one axis (MM1 or MM3) or three axes (MM1-3 or MM3-3), they require an adapter to mount them (MM1-A or MM3-A) and a clamp to hold the pipette, electrode or probe (MM1-C or MM3-C). The complete three axis micropositioner with a magnetic stand are also sold as units (MM1-ALL or MM3-ALL).
