10 Fortunately, a young lady named Jenny Wicks from London, on vacation in Melbourne, took on the challenge. In a short time, with only limited rehearsals Jenny achieved an excellent result, so much so that I offered to pay for her to return the following year. Whilst thrilled with my offer, Jenny was forced to decline because of her drama business commitments in London. So, when God says “trust me”, we should believe!!! For the last three years, Robert Durai has directed the Play, and his wife, Dawn, has been Secretary of the Play. Both of them are devoted to the Passion Play, and are respected by the Cast and Crew. We are hoping that both will continue for the 17th Production of the Play. It is a huge task but, with God’s help, everything will be accomplished. During a lifetime, whatever you do for God, regardless of the obstacles you encounter, the result will be satisfactory. This year during rehearsals, a group of young people came to the park alongside us to celebrate a birthday. Gino Gammaldi, our Manager, told them that the Council allocated the space in writing for 8 Sundays for the Passion Play event. They refused to move, abused us with bad language and turned their radio on high volume. I soon intervened with unpleasant words but decided to move away to avoid any further confrontation. I returned to the group a while later looking to apologize; however, they beat me to it. It turned out the person in question loved acting and has since joined the cast as a Roman soldier. My message therefore is that God works in mysterious ways!!! After the 1988 performance of the Passion Play, my wife, Helen and I went on a pilgrimage to Italy. After three weeks of travelling, I had a stroke in Padua. I lost the use of the left side of my body but, mentally, I was fine. Over thirteen days, I spoke to God, saying that, if it was His Will, He could take me but, if I was allowed to live longer with strength, I would work for the rest of my life helping the needy. I would also ensure that the Passion Play would continue, and would be free for the public to attend. I would establish a Trust Fund to ensure that the Passion Play will continue after my lifetime. The interest from the Fund will cover all expenses for the Passion Play.
