So they are prepared to take their seats and thrive.
I am delighted that an increasing number of our Upper
Division students are participating in the Global Scholars
Initiative. Richard Beaton, Director of the GSI program, and
other faculty are offering courses, workshops and opportuni-
ties for students to be exposed to global themes and issues
and people. Students are developing research projects that
allow them to concentrate on a global issue. Some are having
extensive international travel experiences and others are host-
ing students visiting from other nations. GSI will expand into
the Middle Division in 2013-14 with the incorporation of the
Model UN program into the Grade 8 history curriculum. The
5th grade curriculum has already changed to a World Mapping
program. The World Language program has expanded to a
daily experience for all students in preschool through fourth
grade, making the student better prepared to move into the
language classes in Middle and Upper Divisions.
In addition, Chris Powers, one of our College Counselors and
the Director of Online Learning, will be bringing an increas-
ing array of challenging college level electives to students
who qualify for these options. Our hope is to provide our stu-
dents with exposure to great teachers and classes that in the
past have not been available. Students taking online classes
at Shorecrest will be supervised by a faculty member and
given guidance on how to make best use of the instruction
and assignments.
As much as we want our students to participate in the aca-
demic and extra-curricular programs at Shorecrest, we will be
supportive of students and families wishing to have intensive
semester or year-round experiences. Programs like the School
Year Abroad, which provides the AP curriculum, would allow
a student to study in China, France, Italy or Spain and remain
on target for commencement. This spring students went on
service trips to Guatemala and Costa Rica. This summer Ron
Heller and Courtney Walker will be taking 16 students to
London for two weeks on extensive study of English history.
In a partnership with Eckerd College, our students will stay at
the Eckerd House in London and meet with some of the pro-
fessors that work with the Eckerd students during the school
year. Of course, our students will have Mr. Heller to lead
instruction. (Many of us are convinced he is reincarnated
British Royalty.) Bethsabé Bockman-Pedersen and Kris Grant
will take 4th and 5th graders to Puerto Rica for a week to
practice Spanish and learn about the culture of the nation.
Like any great school, Shorecrest is encouraging students and
teachers to reach outside of the physical borders of our cam-
pus and engage with people, issues and places that have local,
regional, national and global impact. It is a great time to be in
the school business. The opportunities truly are global.
