T
his magazine's theme is Stories of Excellence. At Shorecrest, there are
many stories to choose from that fit into this category, so it wasn't
easy narrowing it down to a few. I decided to focus on four stories: Mike
Murphy's time in China, two of our Chinese exchange students who trans-
lated our website into Mandarin, the amazing "facelift" that our Early
Childhood Center received from internationally-known architect Prakash
Nair, and the creation of SSN, Shorecrest Sports Network, that airs our
athletic games live on the PlayOn! Sports website.
This theme of excellence is carried on throughout the magazine with the Seniors of Distinction
essays; our Volunteer Spotlight Beth Vivio; our Faculty Spotlight featuring three exemplary mem-
bers of the World Language department; all of our achievement pages; Robert Willis, Jr. '77, our
first Alumni Distinguished Achievement Award recipient; and the alumni spotlights: Jeff Reynolds
'08, who was drafted by the New York Mets after graduating from Harvard, and Jonathan Bonner
'05, who through AmeriCorps is teaching art to boys in grades 5-8 at Academy Prep.
Although this year has resulted in tremendous gains for our community, it has also resulted in
shattering losses with the deaths of tenth grader Kyle Bastas; Lower Division Assistant Head,
Dawn Weinman; former staff member Benny Bartlett; and alumni John Jung '88. The loss of all
four of these individuals left our community reeling with grief. A memorial garden for Kyle Bastas
now stands near the steps of Landy Hall. Bricks within the garden are engraved with the words
of classmates, expressing how much Kyle is missed. A ceremony dedicating the new Lower
Division playground to Dawn Weinman will take place on March 25. We will miss these members
of our community every day and strive to live in a way that would make them proud of our
accomplishments.
"To laugh often and much;
to win the respect of the intelligent people
and the affection of children;
to earn the appreciation of honest critics
and endure the betrayal of false friends;
to appreciate beauty;
to find the best in others;
to leave the world a bit better
whether by a healthy child,
a garden patch, or a redeemed social condition;
to know that one life has breathed easier
because you lived here.
This is to have succeeded."
