P
rior to coming to Shorecrest, I served at six
other schools. During that time I met some
fabulous educators, dedicated parents and
talented students. Many of these people taught
me lessons that help guide my behavior and deci-
sions today.
One man, Frank Kaley, the founding headmaster at
Pace Academy in Atlanta, had a valuable insight
when he wrote the motto for the school. The
motto,"To have the courage to strive for excel-
lence," captures an important value that great
teachers, parents, coaches and directors attempt
to instill in their students.
Excellence is a temporary state. One might get a
perfect score on a test, bat 4 for 4 in an important
game or know every line in a play and have the
momentary experience of having performed with
excellence. But the next test, game or play is ahead
and unless we have learned to strive for excellence,
one may never enjoy the experience again.
Mr. Kaley was a wise man. He realized that a per-
son must be courageous in order to continuously
strive for excellence. There is a "new" term being
tossed around the college admissions scene this
year. Universities are stating that they are seeking
students with "grit." During his opening remarks at
Convocation, Head of Upper Division, Tom Dillow,
spoke to our students about the importance of
developing grit. A great GPA
and high test scores may not
be enough to get into an elite
university. The universities want
to enroll students who have
demonstrated the ability to take
on a challenge and stick with it.
Grit is another way of saying to
have the courage to strive for
excellence.
As we read this edition of
Shorecrest Magazine, we will
see some wonderful examples
that show how our own students and alumni are
striving for excellence both at school and in larger
environments. As always, I wish to celebrate the
teachers, coaches, directors and parents who
inspire students to perform at the best of their abil-
ity. I wish to applaud members of our community
who achieve academic, artistic, athletic and per-
sonal excellence. We have many examples of stu-
dents and teachers who demonstrate grit everyday.
I trust you will enjoy reading their stories.
Cheers!
