The Commencement ceremony began with Co-Salutatorian
Jared Elinger welcoming the guests and thanking parents and
faculty for all of their efforts. He spoke on the importance of
friendship, "I learned of the importance of surrounding one's self
with a good, loyal group of friends. Aristotle said it best when he
said `Without friends no one would choose to live, though he had
all other goods.' Thank you to all my peers for everything you
helped teach me."
Valedictorian and Outstanding Senior, Laura Peterson, gave a
motivational address that focused on embracing individuality.
"Judy Garland once said, `Always be a first-rate version of your-
self, instead of a second-rate version of somebody else.' During
high school, we aren't always brave enough to be ourselves. The
pressure to conform is immense, and many people tend to follow,
not lead. It is up to all of us to take advantage of our talents and
become that unique individual that is able to contribute produc-
tively in this world."
The Outstanding Senior of the Class of 2001, Neha Shah
Groeber was the Commencement speaker. She delivered a
humorous speech with a few "words of wisdom" that encour-
aged the seniors to study abroad and to take every opportunity
possible to learn.
"The world really has become a different place since I left
Shorecrest. Since then, it has become a lot larger and a lot
smaller at the same time. Just last week, I was on a videoconfer-
ence with team members across four continents, and it dawned
on me that the ease with which people communicate and com-
mute across international borders today is astounding. The
opportunity not only to do business, but also to learn, has
become truly global...Take every opportunity possible to learn.
Embrace new people, cultures and ideas by studying or working
abroad or volunteering with those less fortunate than you in
your local community. You'll be amazed at what you can learn
about both yourself and others by keeping your eyes, ears and
mind a little open."
The ceremony concluded with Co-Salutatorian Casilia Smith who
spoke of the future by quoting Dr. Seuss' Oh, the Places You'll Go:
"Congratulations! /Today is your day. /You're off to Great Places!
/You're off and away! /You have brains in your head. /You have
feet in your shoes. /You can steer yourself /And direction you
choose. /You're on your own. And you know what you know. /And
YOU are the guy who'll decide where to go."
After the recessional, the graduates stood on the steps outside of
the theater and participated in a final tradition, the cap toss!
Good luck to our newest alumni, the Class of 2012.
