ACHIEVEMENTS
Instrumental Music Director, Tom Glaister, was invited
to perform with the Capitol Quartet, a well-known
classical saxophone quartet from Washington, DC.
They were joined by the Imperial Symphony Orchestra
of Lakeland, Florida.
Upper Division art teacher Mark Runge presented a workshop
at the Florida Art Education Association conference focusing
on the cognitive switch from everyday, mundane thinking to
the art-making moment where creativity
flourishes. The workshop, "Drawing on
Intuition," introduced art educators to
several methods of meditation and art
process that rely on freeplay, which is vital
for making art. After practicing the
techniques, the discussions centered on
taking the methods into the classroom.
Mr. Runge was also selected as an NEH
Summer Scholar from a national applicant
pool to attend one of 22 seminars and
institutes supported by the National
Endowment for the Humanities. He participated in
an institute entitled "Chinese Film and Society."
Using what he learned from the institute, Mr. Runge
developed a five-week project for an Honors
Graphics class, using propaganda posters and
"The Mao Years," a feature length documentary,
as primary sources for the projects. The class was
developed to help serve those students seeking
the Global Scholars Initiative certification for
their graduation.

ACHIEVEMENTS
Upper Division History teacher, Ron Heller, was the
recipient of an award that recognized exceptional
teaching from Stanford University. He was nominated
by Mark Brakeman '12 who wrote, "Mr. Heller had such
a bright outlook on life and was always there to give
me advice or help on anything through my four years of
high school. Although I only had him as a Social Studies
teacher freshman year, he was able to show me the
importance of hard work and finding and embracing
my passions." Mr. Heller was also given an award from
the University of Chicago for having a positive impact
on students that came from the recommendation of
Michael Warren '12.
