The Shorecrest Sports
Network (SSN) is on the air!!
T
hanks to a program called PlayOn! Sports purchased
by the athletic department, Shorecrest Upper and
Middle Division students are getting a hands-on look
at what it takes to become a sports broadcaster.
With PlayOn! Sports, students are able to live-stream
Shorecrest sports events from either Haskell Field or
Crisp Gym. The technology can also be used for non-
sports events.
Each sports broadcast consists of one play-by-play
announcer, one color analyst, a game producer and cam-
era person. With the recent addition of wireless micro-
phones, announcers are able to secure on-field and on-
court interviews with Charger athletes and coaches, both
during halftime and at the end of the game. The
Shorecrest Sports Network (SSN) hopes to add additional
equipment in the future.
All broadcasts are archived on the PlayOn! Sports website,
some as quickly as 20-30 minutes after the game.
The program began with the Charger's final regular sea-
son home football game against Keswick Christian and
continued through the rest of the school year, encompass-
ing boys and girls soccer, boys and girls basketball and
baseball. The SSN expanded from just the Upper Division
to Middle Division at the end of basketball season.
Senior Marc Szasz served as Executive Producer for the
network. "PlayOn! technology is a fantastic way for the
Shorecrest student body to broadcast Shorecrest sporting
events while experiencing hands-on sports event produc-
tions. For me, it has been a great opportunity to do some-
thing that I enjoy while supporting Shorecrest athletics."
Marc has been ably assisted by fellow senior producers/
cameramen Colton Prescott and Troy Horstman. Other par-
ticipants included but were not limited to senior announc-
ers Alex Horden, Jeremy Reiskind, Zach Glover, Lee Waters,
Noah Kartha, Patrick Ayer, C Thambundit, Katie McNees
and Garrett Schulte; juniors Jacob Alexander and Jacob
Rice and sophomores Karim Oliver and Parker Lustig.
With most of this year`s participants being seniors, the
SSN is looking for new anno uncers and production stu-
dents for next year. The SSN is open to students in grades
7-12 and will be part of the Upper Division journalism cur-
riculum in the 2013-14 school year.
Any student interested in participating in the SSN should
contact UD Journalism instructor and SSN advisor Jim
Henderson via e-mail at jhenderson@shorecrest.org, or
you may find him in LH-21 of Landy Hall.
