opportunity for what is thought of as "the good
life." It is common for students to attend school
from 7:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and then go home for 3-
4 hours of homework a night. Saturday and Sunday
test prep classes are common for those students
striving for one of the coveted spaces at a universi-
ty. Attending universities in other nations has
become an option for Chinese who now have the
financial resources and the desire to ensure their
children will have university level educational oppor-
tunities that will translate into career options and
"the good life."
So, American students, already competing for selec-
tion into highly selective universities with the back
end of the American baby-boomlet generation, can
now add students from around the world to the mix.
And many of the international students are coming
from cultures like China where acceptance into a
university has very high stakes.
Our Shorecrest Board had an engaging discussion
about the competition our students face and
whether we should be supporting international stu-
dents who are seeking seats in American universi-
ties. The overwhelming belief is that our students
are better off meeting international students and
knowing that the world they will inherit will have
global competition. We believe the educational
opportunities at Shorecrest provide our students
with the academic and learning skills that will allow
them to compete with students from any school or
any nation. Our challenge is to inspire our students
to take full advantage of what we offer, and at the
same time, for the school to continue to develop
curriculum and programs that give our students the
