to that school, so we covered that
cost," explains Smith. "When one
young man did really well in school
and upon graduation, didn't have
a suit to wear, we gave the money
to buy one. That's the beauty of
our scholarship."
How do celebrities get to Smith's
Bowl-a-Thon? By word-of-mouth,
social media, cross-promotion,
email blasts, radio advertisements,
and print flyer promotions. "I'm a
journalist and I host a radio program
that interviews all sorts of people,
including celebrities. So, once I have
them on the radio, I tell them I do
this event every year and ask them
to participate. Some are willing to
pay their way to the event; others
are sponsored by American Airlines.
Once they've been to one of my
events, they tend to tell their friends,
and the word just spreads."
Smith also receives support from
organizations such as Coca-Cola,
Clear Channel, Evans Engraving,
Senator Royce West, some black
news media outlets, and a few
others. "I'm grateful to have the
backing of several organizations.
They care about what we do. Our
program extends beyond just giving
scholarships directly to students. We
have also supported programs such
as Africare Academy, Jeffries Street
Learning Center, the Emmett Till
Foundation, the African American
Museum, and the Black Academy
of Arts and Letters. We also give
out an annual scholarship to the
Dallas-Fort Worth Association of
Black Journalists. Senator West also
has a neat internship program that
we support. Each year one of the
students gets a scholarship from
the foundation."
Smith's wish is for the foundation
to give away more scholarships.
