Education: The Evolving Locomotive
of Innovative Development
By Bridgette Johnson
Education has evolved throughout
the years and has become a vehicle
of enlightenment, instruction, insight,
and information that has elevated all
mankind. Education is the ability to
impart general knowledge in order
to develop the power of reasoning
and judgment.
Formal education does not start
on the first day an individual starts
school. Neither is it limited to or
bound by the four walls of the
room where an educator imparts
knowledge. Education starts from
our first interaction with other
human beings and it continues even
beyond the classroom. As we learn,
we experience a sense of value
that draws from our five senses:
hearing, smelling, tasting, touching
and seeing. These forms of learning
also ignite intuition and allow us to
gain knowledge as our perspectives
broaden. We see things differently
as our surroundings change and
through understanding, our interest
in life takes on a new form.
Education involves many facets of
learning for an individual to develop.
Now at the beginning of the 21st
education has taken on an innovative
infrastructure, and with the assistance
of today's technology, it has become
limitless in all possibilities.
If we could glimpse a time capsule,
we can parallel the various changes
of the educational system and the
locomotive train. Both entities have
progressed tremendously and mirror
a metamorphosis required in order to
meet the demands society has placed
upon them.
Historically, one of the many aims
of education has been to establish
morals, values, and principles
that will be reflected throughout
society. However, the educational
system can have both positive and
negative influences. We have seen
how discrimination towards men,
women and children has led to
inequalities and prejudices. These
caused unhealthy environments and
hindered growth and development.
For example, studies show that if
young women living in poverty do
not have access to an education early
in life, the life span of the women in
that particular region is shortened.
Generational cycles of poverty and
decreased life expectancy will repeat
due to lack of knowledge that leads
to a positive quality of life.
Education increases understanding
and produces an improvement in the
quality of life. Young women who
are educated tend to stay in school
and the risk of early pregnancy is
decreased. Educated young women
often help their siblings to get an
education and even start their own
businesses. Knowledge escalates and
gives individuals the opportunity to
expand their minds and enlarge their
horizons, as well as opening doors to
new opportunities.
Now that we have viewed and
defined what education is, we can
look and see how the educational
system has taken on a more
progressive and standardized
approach. During the time period
of the 1800's, controversy and
inequalities in the educational system
were rampant: Anti-Catholic Bias in
the textbooks and Ku Klux Klan
opposition to African Americans,
C a t h o l i c s a n d f o r e i g n - b o r n
Americans obtaining an education
are two examples.
At the same time, school systems
integrated Kindergarten and grade
levels as a part of the curriculum in
spite of obstacles and resistance. In
the latter part of the 19th century,
our education system incorporated
adult education and education for
handicapped children. School buses
were utilized to transport children to
school from various destinations and
the Supreme Court passed several
laws that gave student rights and
reformed our educational system.
Today, the system of learning has
limitless possibilities due to the
advancements of technology and
the Internet. Classes are now taught
online via webinars, Skype, satellite
technology, and social media tools
such as Facebook and Twitter.
