Mothers
heart & soul
I caught up with Wayoro and had this conversation
worth sharing:
Your new movie discovering our Mothers, just
premiered. Who is it for?
It's for everyone. We want to make sure that everyone has
access to the knowledge base -- We want to remind people of
the importance of a mother's role in our society. Most people
overlook what women have accomplished over the years. We
want to encourage ourselves, as well as remind everyone
where we came from, so we can be able to take what we've
learned from those who inspired us to be who we are.
I understand the movie is a guide for new mothers
and a tribute to mothers. What message do you want
people to get from the movie?
The message is to learn and share with others what we have
learned. I believe that if you learn something new and it's
working for you, that information should be shared with others.
And that's what mothers do they share their love. In the movie,
you learn about love from listening to different testimonies of
different women. Use what you learn from the movie and apply
to your everyday life. It will motivate and encourage you to love
others the way loving has never been done before.
Is the movie bringing us closer to our mothers and
allowing us to see things differently?
Yes. I want the movie to be a way for people to connect with
their mothers. I also want to make sure that people take their
time to discover who their mothers are. Here is what I found
out in the process of making this movie: I asked people who
their mothers were. Surprisingly, most people couldn't really
give me a straight answer. One of the things that is holding a
lot of people back is forgiveness. Everyone has been wounded
in some way such that it blocks them from forgiving. So, part of
this movie is about forgiveness and I believe this would allow
a lot of people to move forward. In the movie we have a young
lady that did not want to forgive her mother because of the
things that her mother put her through. The problem is that we
don't want to focus on the small things... being able to forgive
and let go will set us free.
Is your movie in the film festivals?
The movie is under review. I was really cautious about which
medium we want to display the movie in, but I will be open to
film festivals. I think that we have a great opportunity to get
it to the people who need it. I want to make sure that people
have access to the film. I want to do a `mothers' film series. It's
possible the next film could be a documentary. I started out with
`discovering' because we want people to dig up and go back to
understanding their foundation as we move forward.
How did you find your cast? What qualities and
characteristics were you looking for?
The young lady who inspired the making of this movie is Raquel
Ramirez and it started out with her coming forward with her
story. After reading a document that she sent to me about her
life story, it really got me motivated to make a film about it.
As we sat down and talked about it, she told me that instead
of making a movie about her, to make it about other mothers.
So, she was the first actor cast in the movie. Then, I looked
for women that had great testimonies that connected with a
lot of different women. In the end, we made a choice on who
to include in the movie. We started out with a huge cast but
minimized it to less than thirty women in this film.
What's your next movie project? When does it start?
After the Discovering Our Mothers film, we decided to film the
next movie called Inspiring Our Mothers. We're currently looking
for women throughout the nation. The other movie I'm working
on is called Vicktoria and it's about relationships. I'm currently
seeking funding for both movies. Both movies will be on IMDB.
com. My goal is to do a one-day release at several theatres on
Mother's Day as a special gift for mothers.
How did you get into film production?
I started out painting pictures and drawing. I wanted to find
a way to incorporate my paintings into video. So, I got a big
camera, experimented with it until I got better at using it. I got
my degree in Visual Communication. I visualize it, digitize and
computerize it. I would add graphics design and incorporate
that into the web pages and turn that into motion graphics.
Really, it all comes back to art.
You describe yourself as "having a sense of
confidence and determination that will motivate
anyone to want to better themselves." does this
come from your upbringing or life changing events
you've encountered in your life?
Yes, because I was always taught to encourage and help people
to live a better life. Being from Abidjan, Africa, it was just a huge
opportunity to be here in the USA. I wanted to take advantage
of that and just be able to fulfill my destiny. And that's to help
people....there's nothing better than to help people.
