A
s she walks to the stage and takes her place at
the podium, Elizabeth Mhangami is poised and
confident. At this Chicago forum on Zimbabwe,
she will discuss the nonprofit organization, Vanavevhu,
her brainchild. Her warm smile, firm but pleasant
handshake, and an unpretentious manner put those in
attendance at ease.
"I am Lizz," she says. "Elizabeth Mhangami; I am the
executive director of Vanavevhu, Children of the Soil,"
she adds. Elizabeth delivers her speech passionately,
making constant eye contact with her audience, a craft
she has perfected over the years through a variety of
public speaking engagements. She is a sister on a mission
to better the lives of AIDS-orphaned young people who
are heads of their households in her beautiful home town
of Bulawayo, the second largest city in Zimbabwe.
