Whether on stage at a concert, in the
hot seat as an interviewee or in front
of the camera as an actor, Matthews is
the quintessential performer. His media
interviews are always fresh, usually side-
splittingly funny and are characterised
by him poking fun at himself. His acting
performances are similarly genuine and
surprisingly good.
on a personal noTe...
As much as Matthews leaves it all on
stage in his performances, he shares little
of his personal life. In 2000 he married
his girlfriend of 9 years, Jennifer Harper.
The couple has twin daughters, Stella and
Grace, born in 2001 and a son, August, born
in 2007.
The Matthews clan currently lives in
Seattle, Washington but spends summers
in Charlotteville, Virginia, where Matthews
owns the historic Blenheim Farm. In 2000,
apparently at his mother's urging, he planted
grapes and established the winery Blenheim
Vineyards.
A strong proponent for family-owned
farms, Matthews joined the Farm Aid Board
of Directors in 2001. Founders Willie Nelson,
Neil Young and John Mellencamp staged the
first Farm Aid concert in 1985 and Farm Aid
has since raised more than $43 million in
support of family farmers in the US.
Rock star, comedian, actor,
philanthropist, husband and father at just
46-years of age, Dave Matthews's story is
nowhere close to being fully told, and yet
this son of South Africa is already a legend
in his own lifetime.
