ir travel continues to be the most
effective means to get from point
A to point B, but the glory days
of air travel are long gone.
Today taking a flight is not
the "occasion" it was in the
past. You will no longer
be able to languidly
recline on a sofa, sipping on martinis made
beside you, while puffing on your cigar when
taking a flight instead you will ferried as
quickly and as comfortably as possible to
your destination with as little fuss and pomp
and ceremony as possible.
But flying can be stressful so you should
always keep a good sense of humour
about you at all times and always over, as
opposed to under prepare, for the event.
Tip 10 prepare To sleep
Now you have probably seen people all over
the airport carrying those ridiculous bean
bag cushions tied to their carry on luggage
and scoffed at how silly and cumbersome
they may look. Until recently I too was you.
I scoffed at those people that is until I
bought one and tried it on my last long-haul
flight. Bliss. Sheer bliss. Even though we
flew economy all the way to Europe and the
flight was packed to the rafters, or should we
say, overhead lockers, I was able to sleep
and restfully. So don't jest and don't mock.
Go prepared to sleep on the plane and pack
a small bag with comfortable sleep socks, a
travel pillow and even a pair of comfy pants.
Tip 9 know The rules
After 9/11 the world of air travel changed
forever. In the past you could literally pack
your on board luggage with all that you
needed for a two-night trip to Europe and
take it with you on the plane. Including
toothpaste, mouthwash, deodorant and
expensive perfume. Today the rules have
changed significantly and you are no longer
able to get through security with more than
100ml of any given `liquid'. While this seems
to be different for every airline and airport it
is always best to check.
Tip 8 elecTronIc equIpMenT
Potentially also as a result of 9/11 and
heightened security the laws around electronic
equipment has also changed. All laptops,
tablets and phones have to be scanned
individually so try and not wedge them
behind that box of choccies for mom where
they are hard to reach. Instead ensure they
are easily reachable and quick to take out and
put back in. Very importantly do not, unless
you absolutely have to, pack your bulky laptop
charger in your checked in baggage and your
now flat laptop in your carry on luggage. If
security deem your device as suspicious and
request that you turn it on and it doesn't they
will take it away from you.
Tip 7 pack lIghT carry on
While you may be tempted to over pack every
little bit of space at your disposal, don't. An
airport with a heavily laden and cumbersome
carry on bag slung onto your back won't be
pleasant, especially once you have cleared
security and there are no more trolleys to
help disguise the bag that is hiding the family
jewels that now weighs a ton.
Tip 6 drInk loTs of waTer
Once on your flight you will be told to drink
lots of water and while the pain of having to
climb over your fellow passengers to go to
