ith so many
pampering and
revitalising spa
treatments to choose
from, ranging from
the likes of body wraps,
massages, manicures,
pedicures, waxing and
aromatherapy, amongst
others, it is important to start from top to bottom
beginning with facials.
Apart from a daily skin care routine,
facials are one of the best ways to take care
of your skin, especially when given by an
experienced and knowledgeable therapist. This
spa treatment, whilst relaxing and pampering,
cleans, exfoliates and nourishes the skin and
promotes a clear, well-hydrated complexion that
helps to make the skin look younger.
Generally, a facial follows a few basic
steps. Starting off the face undergoes a
thorough cleansing using cotton pads,
aesthetician wipes or sponges. From there,
the aesthetician will look at the skin through
a brightly lit magnifying lamp and from there
will determine the client's basic skin type (dry,
oily, combination, sensitive or normal) and skin
conditions (acne, blackheads, whiteheads,
aging, sun-damage, dehydration, etc.)
Once completed, the aesthetician will
then choose the appropriate products and
treatments to use for the facial. Before applying
any products to the face a machine is used
which directs a thin vapour of warm steam to
the face. The steam softens any blackheads or
whiteheads, this is to ensure for easy extraction
later. Once the face is softened, exfoliation
takes place using a mechanical or chemical
defoliant. Mechanical exfoliants have a gritty
texture that rub away the surface of dead skin
cells. Chemical exfoliation uses enzymes and
acids to loosen the bond between the skin cells.
After the dead skin cells have been removed,
the blackheads and whiteheads are extracted.
With the cleaning, extracting and exfoliating
now done, the soothing pampering can begin.
The face is massaged using classic strokes like
effleurage, which stimulates the skin and facial
muscles. A facial mask specific to the client's
skin type and condition is then applied to the
face and whilst on, the aesthetician gives the
scalp a massage to increase relaxation.
Facial masks can contain ingredients like
clay, black moor mud, Aloe Vera, seaweed,
algae, essential oils, massage oils, herbs and
vitamins. Once the facial mask is removed
either by rinsing with water, wiping off with a
damp cloth or peeling off by hand then toner,
serums and moisturiser is applied, leaving the
skin refreshed and rejuvenated.
Although facemasks can be purchased
at any local store, it is recommended that
facials are done at spas and wellness centres
by professional spa therapists. However, with
people having busy lives and over loaded
schedules it is sometimes hard to schedule an
appointment, and store bought, or homemade,
facials are the only option. Apart from DIY
facials, there are also a few more things one
can do to fix skin woes and avoid future skin
damage.
A daily regular skin care routine is always
beneficial as washing the face with a gentle
face cleanser, especially before going to bed,
helps remove the day's debris and make up,
which can prevent skin irritation, clogged pores
and breakouts. When considering face wash,
sunscreen and facial products it is essential that
the products used are refreshed because when
a product is applied consistently, the skin slides
into maintenance mode after about a year and
the product becomes useless.
Managing stress is also important for skin
health as emotional upheavals, and the frown
lines that come with it increases the stress
hormone cortisol, which causes inflammation
that breaks down collagen. It also triggers
a chain of responses that can lead to facial
redness and acne flare-ups. So keeping
the mind healthy is as important as keeping
the body healthy when it comes to the skin's
wellbeing. Getting a good supply of Omega 3
fatty acids daily, which can be found in oily fish,
flaxseed and walnuts will also help the skin.
If using a daily skin care routine managing
stress and maintaining a healthy diet then a
facial is the cherry on the top. And sometimes
one can enjoy this `cherry' when an opening
in the schedule appears, or if one has just
received a spa voucher from that special
someone. Make a booking or use the voucher
