board to achieve its maximum potential.
Due to their construction, the boards are
designed to be stable, even when the surfer
is just catching rays. With this in mind,
the entry-level beginner will start by lying
stomach down on the board, and will then
progress to sitting and kneeling on it.
Once the basics are mastered, the
surfer will then be able to stand fully on the
board, and even walk on it while on water,
leaning side to side guiding the direction
of the board and carving corners in the
water below. A cable handle controller, with
maximum grip, attached to the front of the
board, as well as a not-slip footpad, gives
the rider stability when surfing.
In terms of skill required, surf jetting
is surprisingly easy and can be learnt
and enjoyed by the whole family. Kuban's
company still provides the Surfjet today,
which supply the Malibu and Pacifica
models, available through DeckJet
Watercraft, these are great for beginners,
while its Freestyle model is perfect for the
H2O hotshots.
Another supplier, JetSurf, offers its
Pro Race Model for advanced riders and
competition use, the basic Jetsurf for
entry-level riders and the fully
equipped Jetsurf for `goofy' or
regular riders.
So what is it that powers
these H2O hotshots to great
speeds? In the case of the
Surfjet it is the exclusive
SUBARU marine twin
cylinder engine or the
Hydroforce Jet Pump, both
of which enable riders to
reach top speeds on
the water.
The exclusive
SUBARU marine twin
cylinder engine is a
water-cooled 255cc
powerhouse that
boasts quality features
including a reed valve
intake, CDI ignition,
stainless steel fasteners,
sacrificial zinc anode
and an ignition safety
stop system. Surfjet's
patented centrifugal pump
is lightweight, compact and
efficient. Its integral noise
reduction design actually
increases power while
reducing sound levels, so the
rider can reach high speeds
and instead of having noise in
their ears, will have wind in their hair.
The fibre-reinforced ZYTEL impeller
of the Surfjet does not have large blades
to turn, therefore it spins at much higher
speeds. The water forced through the
impeller is channelled by the housing,
creating a water jet that propels the
vessel forward. The housing is
normally tapered into a nozzle
to increase the speed of the
water, which also creates a
Venturi effect in which low
pressure behind the impeller
pulls more water towards the
blades, tending to increase
the speed. This impeller also
saves reciprocating mass
that translates to increased
response and faster speeds.
According to Wikipedia,
an impeller is a rotor inside
a tube or conduit used to
increase the pressure and
flow of a fluid or gas. Some
impellers are similar to
small propellers however
without the large blades.
Among other uses, they
are used in water jets to
power high-speed boats.
Since impellers have no
large blades to turn, they
can spin at much higher
speeds than propellers,
meaning the water forced
through the impeller is
channelled by the housing and
therefore creates a water jet that
propels the vessel forward.
It's the engines and pumps used in
these vessels that create an adrenaline
induced thrill even on the calmest of dams
and lakes. So even if water sport junkies
have dreamed of becoming surfers, and
they do not live anywhere close to the
sea or have waves big enough to ride,
it's no longer a problem, thanks to an
engine that can propel the board up to
a few kilometres an hour regardless of
`waveless' waters.
But all these thrills and entertainment
come with safety regulations and as all
engine powered surfboards / personal
watercraft are a "Class A" inboard boat,
which means the use of it is subject to all
applicable country and local boating laws.
Although these boards are known to be a
safe water toy, surfers are still encouraged
to always wear a USCG-approved personal
flotation device when riding it.
Apart for being known for their safety,
these watercrafts are also known for their
practicality when it comes to transportation
and storage. When the adrenaline packed
fun is done and the sun goes down, the
board's small frame makes it easy to
transport as it easily fits on the top of a car,
no trailer needed. And when storing in the
home, propped up in the corner, it takes less
space than a bicycle.
It's no wonder that with its unique
design, easy storage, and the ability to
reach high speeds and provide riders with
thrills and adrenaline loaded water fun, that
the Surfjet or the JetSurf are the current
must-have water toys.
