over 100 years, the
Kruger National Park
is today one of not just
Africa's, but the world's
most treasured havens of
natural heritage and
biodiversity.
An area made up of nearly two million
hectares of rolling bushveld, where one can
see and experience savannahs, grasslands,
mountainous regions and much more, the
Kruger National Park is ranked as one of
the top game parks in Africa.
a hIstorIc journey
The original park was created around the
concern of a select few individuals as far
back as 1898 about the precautions of
the wildlife in the area. In fact the idea
first stemmed from a gentleman called
Jakob Louis van Wyk who first approached
the government of the old South African
Republic in 1895 with the idea of forming
a natural game reserve to preserve a fast
dwindling game population, that was under
pressure from extensive hunting in the area.
Garnering support from another
gentleman, R. K. Loveday, the two men
tabled the request in 1885, however it
wasn't until 26 March 1898, that through
the proclamation of the president of the
Transvaal Republic, Paul Kruger, of an
official "Government Wildlife Park" that the
first seeds were planted and a park called
the "Sabi Game Reserve", its original name,
was then formed.
In 1902 the Sabi Game Reserve
received its first warden, with the
appointment of James Stevenson Hamilton.
Geographically the park was at this point
nowhere near the size of what it is today.
In fact it was located in what is today only
one third of the modern park. It was shortly
after this that the Shingwedzi Reserve,
named after the river in the area, was also
