The Australian and New Zealand press
tended to fixate on a Stability Augmentation
System (SAS) that was believed to have
been on the Oracle cat and that is designed
to assist with trimming the foils. However
there is still no evidence of this. According to
race aficionados and analysts, popular belief
is that it was less due to a probable SAS
and more due to the fact that the Oracle cat
was more refined but had lower drag foils
which initially made it very difficult to sail
until such a time as the team managed to
figure out how to beat the wind.
Looking at the sheer talent of the
skipper and the sailing ability of the team
itself has, for the most part, silenced many
of the critics.
the Future
Almost directly after the race, Australia's
Hamilton Island Yacht Club (HIYC) was
confirmed as the official "Challenger of
Record" for what will be the 35th America's
Cup. After the challenge being issued, the
Golden Gate Yacht Club (GGYC), accepted
it as the challenge of record. HIYC will
receive its backing from Australian billionaire
Bob Oatley. Accordingly, and as per the
rules, the GGYC and HIYC expect to have a
Protocol Governing the 35th America's Cup,
including dates, venue, boats and other
details, agreed and published in the first few
months of 2014.
No matter where it is held, who the
skipper at the helm is, or who sponsors the
vessels, the America's Cup or simply Auld
Mug, will remain a dream for many men and
boys alike. All of whom would themselves
love to take sail on one of these prestigious
yachts.

The America's Cup is officially the oldest
international sporting trophy and was
originally and first awarded in 1851. The
first race was hosted by the Royal Yacht
Squadron and the race itself was held around
the Isle of Wight in England. Unlike popular
belief, the race did not originate in America,
nor is it always held there. Instead it was first
won by a schooner called America and as a
result was named the America's Cup after the
yacht itself.
The rules are downright confusing and
the stages can themselves be a minefield
to navigate through, much like the game
of cricket is for American tourists. But once
you get the just of how it works you will be
hooked. The cup, the America's Cup, was
originally donated to the New York Yacht
Club also known as the NYYC under what is
termed the Deed of Gift. This arrangement
has ensured that the cup was from henceforth
available for perpetual international
competition, and encourages challengers to
step up to the plate.
Challengers must meet the minimum
requirements specified in the Deed of Gift,
after which they have the right to challenge
the defender or club that holds the trophy.
Whoever wins the race gains stewardship of
the cup.
The original trophy was held by the
aforementioned NYYC from 1857, right up
to 1983, when it was won by the Royal Perth
Yacht Club in their yacht Australia II. This
victory was to end the longest winning streak
in the history of the sport.
It wasn't until 1970 that the rules
changed and for the first time in its history
there were multiple challengers. The NYYC
relented and agreed that the rules could be
bent to accommodate. It was this that the
club agreed: "the challengers could run a
selection series with the winner becoming the
official challenger and competing against the
defender in the America's Cup match".
