F
rom "Basketball Wives" to "Hip
Hop Atlanta," the image of
women on reality TV needs a
Holy Ghost facelift. Most reality TV
shows portray women as cat fighting,
back biting and insecure. You will
rarely if ever hear them discuss
church or spirituality, because God is
not the author of confusion. You can
count on one hand the number of
family oriented reality TV shows that
void of profanity and/or violence. This
has left most viewers yearning for a
better selection of programming they
can enjoy, without blushing or having
to cover their children's eyes and ears
every other word.
That's where Women of Ruth
Entertainment (WOR) comes in.
Women of Ruth is an family-oriented
entertainment and production
company launched in March 2012.
Partners LaVerne Adekunle and
Steffanie Rivers said they chose
the name for their entertainment
and production company, because
it depicts a group of women who,
in the midst of their struggles, use
their God-given talents to help
others while moving towards their
destiny. Although WOR was recently
formed, LaVerne's years of marketing
skills coupled with Steffanie's media
production talents are more of a
transfer of energy from one entity to
the next. Now these Women of Ruth
say they have combined their passion
and their profession to produce the
new reality TV show Women Pastors -
Ladies In the Pulpit
.
Rivers says she knows some people
will be turned off at the thought
of a reality TV show featuring
women pastors, but she says with
so many negative images of young
women flooding the airwaves, she's
determined to use her talents to
show the strength and leadership of
women. What better way to do so than
with positive images of Women of
God who have personal testimonies
of triumph which will help other
women to see their way through their
own personal challenges.
Some of the cast members might
not be household names, but their
personal challenges of commitment
and sacrifice are common among
women. Fran Capo holds five
Guinness World Records, but she's
best known as the World's Fastest
Talking Woman. This single mother
is a New York City radio show host;
Dr. Ane Mercer is co-pastor of Rhema
Center International in Jacksonville,
FL with her husband, Pastor Derrick
Mercer. Dr. Ane recently
penned a book detailing
the affair she had with
h e r f o r m e r p a s t o r
who she later married.
Mercer said when God
told her to divorce him
and send him back to
his first wife, she obeyed
and that's when she
received her blessing;
Dr. Deborah Powell is
best known as the first
cousin of gospel duo
Toby and Reba McGuire. She and
her husband, Steve, have built an
orphanage in Africa to help place
children with families; Evangelist
Denise Liz Tshiteya is from Belgium,
but resides in Atlanta part of the year.
This bishop's wife also is a psalmist
who has released her first gospel CD,
"He's So Good," available in stores
now; Evangelist Felecia Spaulding
was born and raised in Lima, Ohio
and still calls it home. Most of the cast
members have written books about
the inner most personal experiences.
And they will share even more about
their journeys to the pulpit during
the first season of Women Pastors
Ladies In the Pulpit
.
The series can be viewed on Youtube
(search Ladies In the Pulpit) while
the producers pitch their show to
a number of networks. And even
though nobody walks on tables or
fights in fine restaurants the show
is sure to be a fan favorite. Look out
Honey Boo Boo Child!
