News You Could Use
I
t all began with a classroom assignment at the University
of California at Northridge, where student Dahli Coles
was studying fashion merchandising. "The assignment
was to create a wearable item made of recycled materials,"
recalls Coles. Excited for the task, she created a stylish bag
made from newspaper.
"I've always been drawn to the texture of recycled paper;
and paper in general, and I love raw materials," she says.
"It was the perfect assignment for me, because it allowed
me to combine all my interests."
The result? Coles' college classmates raved about the
bag--which triggered her entrepreneurial spirit. "The
bag received such an outstanding response," recalled
Coles, who launched The News Los Angeles in 2002, and
began selling her personalized newsprint bags at Farmer's
Markers, art shows, and wholesale shows throughout
the U.S. Customers came flocking; and a small business
was born.
