Transforming Communities
equanimity:
As you transform your community, what message do
you want people to get?
pavlina:
That kids can start from nothing (like I did) and make
something that is their own. I don't think anyone thought when
I started playing steel drums on the street that that would turn
into a career as a radio personality, but it did. I've had people tell
me you have to do things a certain way¾that there's a formula
to everything. The formula is YOU. That's it. I'm giving a speech
for the Youth Empowering and Leadership Learning Organization
at the Orange County Convention Center. I'm speaking about
leadership and self-esteem. I have learned a lot from the people
I've interviewed. And now I'll be passing that along to other future
leaders! Self-esteem is something I thought I had, but Gloria
Steinem (she has a book called Self-Esteem) had me looking at it
differently, so I can feel moments when I doubt myself and I know
how to straighten it out. So my message? Get out there and be a
leader. Have confidence in yourself to do it and make a difference.
equanimity:
What makes you happy?
pavlina:
Amusement parks, Vietnamese food, and going to
movies with my family.
