"complementary" or "alternative" medicine practices are
now being considered as "fundamental" to overall health
and well-being.
Research has shown that the mind-body approach to
medicine may reduce blood pressure, the activity of stress
hormones, the incidence of anxiety and depression, while
enhancing the immune system. The role of nutrition and
mindful eating is increasingly implicated as essential to
a healthful, balanced life. The concept of mindful eating
involves choosing food that is both nutritious as well as
pleasing to the senses. It includes an increased awareness
by the individual regarding the origins of the food and its
possible nourishing proponents. The basic tenet of the
belief that food is medicine is a diet that centers around
whole foods. "Whole foods" are defined as those foods
that are eaten in their natural state. They are not processed
and do not contain man-made chemicals, additives, or
preservatives. This includes fresh vegetables and fruits,
whole grains, legumes, nuts/seeds, healthy fats (olive oil
and omega-3 fats) and animal proteins derived from organic
and sustainable farming practices. Diets that are high in
plants have consistently shown to improve outcomes for
cancer prevention and survivorship, decrease incidence of
chronic diseases such as heart disease, stroke, diabetes, as
well as help to maintain a healthy weight.
While Hippocrates may have been one of the first to have
insight regarding the use of food to improve health and
cure disease, the intuition of Thomas Edison regarding the
importance of nutrition to overall health may be summed
in the following quote, "The doctor of the future will no
longer treat the human frame with drugs, but rather will
cure and prevent disease with nutrition".
