ust north of the South African
border lies a rare desert jewel. A
land where sunsets extend as far as
the eye can see and the rolling dunes
harbour only the most resilient of
wildlife. This is Namibia.
In this issue Legacy Inspires
magazine takes a look at the Legacy
Windhoek Country Club and Resort with
its Desert Jewel Casino. As a precursor
to the feature we talk to the man at the helm
of this magnificent property, Tony Boucher
its general manager, about how long he has
been at the property what he loves most about
Namibia and what inspires him each day.
Q
How long have you been with the
Legacy Group?
I have been with the Legacy Group for a
decade this December and I have spent this
entire time at the group in Namibia.
Q
Tell us a bit about your time with the
group and where you have worked prior
to joining Legacy?
When I joined Legacy it was here in Namibia
and I first started at the Swakopmund Hotel
and Entertainment Centre on the West Coast
in December 2002. I later transferred to the
Windhoek Country Club and Resort in June
2004 and have been here ever since.
I have always been in the hospitality
industry, it is what has defined my career
since I first stated out. Prior to joining Legacy
I was employed by Sun International and the
Southern Sun Hotels.
Q
Tell us a little more about Windhoek why
should your guests choose you over any
other hotel?
The Windhoek Country Club and Resort is
exceptionally popular with Guests and today
the majority of our business is made up of
returning guests who have spent time with us,
enjoyed their stay, and simply had to return. I
would say that one of the salient features we
offer guests is the notion and convenience
of a "resort within the city" the city being
Windhoek, Namibia's capital.
In addition to the convenience and
experience we offer every one of our guests,
the resort itself has its own personality.
The people here are friendly and courteous
going out of their way to please the guests
and this in its self ensures that our guests
are comfortable and cared for at every part
of their stay. I would have to say that those
are some of the main factors as to why our
guests love to stay with us and why they
return time and again.
Q
How important are your staff to you
and do you have any long serving
employees?
Staff are our most valuable asset and are
of extreme importance to any establishment
and here at the Windhoek Country Club and
Resort we are no different. Our staff form a
critical part of the personality of the property.
As is the case with many of the Legacy Hotels
m many of our staff have been with us since
the original opening
Q
On a personal note what is one of the
most memorable times you have had in
your career?
To me every single day is a memorable one,
especially when you are making the most
out of each day. What really stands out for
me personally though is when the team gets
singled out for making a particular guest's stay
extra special, or when a function goes really
well and the guests are really happy with it. It
is these moments that make it all worthwhile.
Q
What do you love about Namibia and
how would you promote it to a stranger?
Namibia is largely an undiscovered gem on
the African continent. Personally I love the
peace and the tranquillity that its wide-open
spaces afford one, I can't explain it, it simply
has to be experienced first hand. In addition
the infrastructure by African standards is
absolutely top class, which makes it a great
holiday destination for guests as it comes
with all the creature comforts they are used
to as well.
Q
What would you say inspires you in life?
God inspires and motivates me each and
every day.
