elons,
lemons, limes,
guavas, peaches,
apricots, tropical
fruit may sound
like making up a
fruit salad for a
summer buffet
but these are
words often used to express the aromas and
flavours of white wines! Crisp, fresh, chilled,
racy white wines welcome in the warm months
ahead and we are spoilt for choice as the
Cape produces some of the finest white wines
in the world.
Sauvignon Blanc still rates amongst the
most popular choice with white wine drinkers
but it is encouraging to see Chenin Blanc on
the rise. Chenin Blanc's versatility is perhaps
why the variety appeals to so many. From dry
to semi-sweet, still wines to sparkling wines as
well as several excellent dessert wines. They
can be enjoyed on their own, especially the
younger un wooded style, but many examples
having extra lees contact and/ or fermented
and matured in wood adds an interesting
dimension for food pairing.
Chardonnay is back on the shopping
list as wine makers persist on perfecting the
varieties role with oak. Using 2nd or 3rd fill
oak barrels has helped ease the previous
heavy oak domination from the wine, but
where the winemakers have used 1st fill
barrels their selection of the wood and type
of toasting has allowed for better balance in
the final result. However those who have an
adversity to wood will be delighted to know
that there are some excellent un wooded
versions on offer.
The blending of white varieties offers
another dimension to the enjoyment of white
wine and perhaps the most common white
blends are from Sauvignon Blanc, Chenin
Blanc and Chardonnay. Other varieties
like Viognier, Semillon and Verdelho add a
somewhat different element to blending but
these cultivars can be seen as single varietal
wines as well.
Rhine Riesling, Bukettraube and
Gewurztraminer varieties appeal to the
sweeter palate but also for spicy food lovers
these wines work miracles! Sweeter still are
the "sticky" or dessert wines, some being
noble late harvests which are made from
grapes with noble rot (botrytis). They are best
enjoyed at the end of a meal either with rich
pudds or cheeses.
So there are plenty of choices for the
adventurous white wine imbiber this summer
and whether it's for daily quaffing, to take
along to a picnic or enjoy over an al fresco
luncheon have fun! Here are a few delicious
wines to start you off!
