SCENE
ocking the night away and
keeping guests entertained for
the evening was South African
Music sensation Goldfish, two
boys from Cape Town - Dominic
Peters and David Poole. We
chat to Goldfish's Dominic
to find out a little more
about them and what
we can expect from this dynamic duo in the
coming months.
Q
You chaps have become a household
name in South Africa, but tell me how
did the name Goldfish come about? Is there a
story to accompany it?
Well, when we were students Dave always
used to joke about how I was always losing
my keys, wallet, phone but was able to
remember all sorts of intricate music related
stuff, so he used to call me Goldfish. Fair
enough. The name just stuck when we were
looking for a name for the project.
Q
Your music is quite eclectic in your own
words what style of music would you
say you play? And that said what would you
say the main influencers in your music have
been?
We try to make electronic music that has
soul. It's got a bit of dirt rubbed in and it's
got an organic feel. A lot of electronic music
is quite fluorescent and sterile sounding so
we always try and inject some warmth and a
human feel with live instruments. We listen to
a lot of stuff and our inspiration comes from
all over. That said, you could say we have
a similar sound to St Germain, Moby, Parov
Stellar, Kruder & Dorfmeister to name a few.
Q
With that you seem to attract quite a
mixed crowd ranging from young and
old. How do you think you strike a balance?
Everyone wants to dance and have a good
time. Whatever age you are. We're stoked
that our music touches that nerve in people
no matter what their age.
Q
Where are some of your favourite
places to play? On that note they say it
is difficult to play on a beach because of the
acoustics, how do you overcome that?
Playing on the beach usually means there are
little or no acoustics. There is nothing for the
sound to reflect off really other than the sand.
It's actually more difficult playing indoors than
outdoors for sound. The only problem with
playing outdoors is dealing with the elements
like wind rain and sea salt, but if we had our
way we'd only play on the beach!
Q
You boys are Cape Town born and
bred but seem to have attracted quite a
national and on that international following.
What is it like to travel and what do you look
for most in a destination?
Touring is amazing and it's a privilege to be
able to play music all over the world. Music
is the universal language and what could be
more awesome than to go to travel almost six
months of the year. It's pretty surreal seeing
how far our music has spread and having
a crowd sing your songs back to you, even
though their first language isn't even English,
is an amazing feeling.
Q
What has been your favourite gig and
why?
Wow, too many favourite gigs to single out
just one, but playing home town shows in
Kirstenbosch and our Submerged Sundays
residency in Camps Bay at St Yves are
always special for us. There's nothing like
playing to your home crowd, the people who
made you who you are today. Apart from
that we have had some incredible shows in
Amsterdam, Ibiza and Brazil which all bring
back amazing memories. Looking forward to
making more!
Q
What is your favourite sound / instrument
that you enjoy adding to the mix when
making your music?
Depends on the song. We love combining
electronic and acoustic sounds together in a
way that brings out their best characteristics.
Between us we play quite a few instruments so
it's that elusive magic mix that keeps us excited.
Q
Which audiences have been the most
appreciative of your music and on that
which audience would you not hesitate to play
for again?
Ibiza audiences are amazing. It's pretty
much a united nations of electronic music
and it's a crowd who place a bigger priority
on music than anywhere else in the world.
We love playing there and being immersed
in the culture of music. We have been living
there every Summer for six years and it's an
invaluable source of inspiration for us. If you
love dance and electronic music, it's a place
you have to go.
Q
Tell us a little about some of the future
plans of Goldfish? Can we expect to
see much more coming from you guys in the
future?
Keep a look out for our new album `3 Second
Memory' dropping in February we are just
putting the finishing touches to it and we're
really excited to share it with the world. Also
our Submerged Sundays residency at St Yves
in Camps bay is in its sixth year, catch us
there every Sunday evening throughout the
Summer, although Mondays are always a little
difficult afterwards.
Q
What would you say inspires you
guys and what have been the biggest
influences in your life?
Inspiration comes from all over but anyone
who you see and just go ` that person is
doing exactly what they are supposed to
be doing' in whatever field it may be in, is
always inspiring. Anyone living their passion
is incredibly magnetic to other people so it is
always good to surround yourself with those
kinds of people. Also, surfing is a huge source
of inspiration. Something about floating in the
ocean is incredibly therapeutic. Maybe it's
the salt or the ions or something but it's an
amazing reset button for a long transatlantic
flight or a day in the studio. Plenty of our
tracks have started out as a little tune being
hummed to ourselves out at the backline.
Q
If you could leave a single legacy in life
what would it be?
We get a lot of mails and messages
from people who have used our music at
weddings, funerals, inspirational talks, break
ups, road trips - you name it. Hopefully
leaving a discography of songs that have
brought people some happiness and maybe
been the soundtrack to many amazing
moments and memories for them. Music is
the soundtrack to life and it's an honour to
have been part of so many people's lives who
you haven't even met.

If you could live anywhere in the world
where would it be?
The way it is working
out right now seems just fine - Summer in
Cape Town and Summer in Ibiza!
We try to make electronic music that
has soul. It's got a bit of dirt rubbed in
and it's got an organic feel.
