Accommodation
Given the worldwide reputation and popularity of the Great Migration, there is no shortage of
accommodation in and around the Masai Mara National Reserve. On the contrary, choosing
where to stay from the abundant options available may well be the most difficult part of your
trip. The website www.maasaimara.com is an excellent resource for perusing accommodation
options and making online enquiries.
Vaccinations
Malaria prophylaxis is essential before departing for Kenya and because Kenya lies in the
Yellow Fever Belt, a Yellow Fever Certificate (of vaccination) is compulsory for all persons one
year and older to be allowed re-entry into South Africa. Also recommended are vaccinations
for Hepatitis A and B and cholera.
Visa Information
South African Passport holders who are spending no more than 30 days in Kenya do not
require a visa to visit the country.
the vast herd is challenged to cross the steep,
crocodile-infested banks of the rain-swollen
Mara River to reach the greener pastures of
the Mara Triangle, that lie beyond.
Mindful of this, the most perilous part of its
journey, the two million strong herd will mostly
seek to cross at low points on the river. The
animals are nervous however and the process
frequently unravels when one skittish beast
ventures to cross at a too-steep point and is
followed by the herd. The resulting stampede
will leave countless animals injured or dead
from drowning or trampling and a veritable
feast for the patient crocodiles that lie in wait.
When it comes to the Great Migration
also known as the Great Serengeti Masai
Mara Migration, the Great Serengeti Migration,
the Great Masai Mara Migration and the Great
Wildebeest Migration a hot air balloon safari
offers a front row seat of a natural event that is
unparalleled in its scope and majesty.
Tour operators have cottoned on quickly
to the appeal of viewing the migration from
the air and there is no shortage of hot air
balloon operators to choose from. A typical
hot air balloon safari in the region will last
about 60 minutes. Departures take place at
sunrise and nearly all operators include a
champagne breakfast in the package, which
is cooked and served after landing on the
wide open Mara plains.
