THE WICKING CENTRE ACADEMY
The WDREC has transformed its world-class research
into clinical and non-clinical products and services
designed to build the capability of the aged care sector
equipping it to meet the challenges of the future.
Through its educational branch, the Wicking Centre
Academy, the WDREC will be offering three exciting
educational initiatives in 2013:
1. ASSOCIATE DEGREE IN DEMENTIA CARE
The University of Tasmania's Associate Degree in
Dementia Care is the first and only course of its kind
in Australia. Students will learn about the concepts
of normal ageing, diseases that cause dementia,
behaviours associated with the disease and practical
strategies to care for people with dementia including
challenging situations and behaviours.
The combined face-to-face and online delivery of the
Associate Degree in Dementia Care supports students
to balance their work, study and personal life.
Students will study part-time, undertaking two units
(offered in flexible delivery mode) per semester with a
total of 16 units, typically taking 2.5 years to complete.
HECS-free study may be available for 2013 (eligibility
criteria applies).
2. CLINICAL LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT
PROGRAMS
The Wicking Centre Academy has partnered with
Gravitas Consulting, a leader in the field of Aged Care
Leadership and Organisational Capability Development
to offer a series of Clinical Leadership Development
Programs for both established and emerging clinical
leaders in the aged care setting. Completion of
these programs offers participants the opportunity
of attaining an Advanced/ Diploma of Management
through our partner RTO, Orpheus Consulting Group.
Organisations may be eligible for financial assistance
through a range of government initiatives to facilitate
employee involvement in these programs.
3. UNDERSTANDING DEMENTIA MOOC: A FREE
ONLINE COURSE
The Understanding Dementia MOOC is a free
online course open to anyone with an interest
in dementia. Divided into three primary themes
related to understanding dementia the brain, the
diseases, the person the Understanding Dementia
MOOC builds upon current international dementia

learning opportunity, without fees, exams or lengthy
