This paper will discuss a national study
investigating quality of life (QoL) issues for
people with dementia residing in aged care
facilities; unique in its national focus and use of
multiple data sources and perspectives.
This project is partly based on a large and
detailed study conducted in the USA, and it
forms the first extensive investigation into
QoL for people with dementia in Australian
residential care facilities. Data is being
collected in five states and one territory, from
approximately 480 residents in 48 facilities. To
gain an in-depth understanding of QoL and the
factors that affect it, data is being gathered
from a range of sources: the facilities, their
staff, residents' family members, and the
residents themselves.
Research into QoL experienced by aged care
facility residents with dementia was rare until
the last decade, mostly due to a belief that it
is difficult to determine QoL for this group of
people, particularly from their own perspective.
By collecting QoL information from the
perspective of residents as well as family
and caregivers, in addition to other factors
potentially affecting QoL, we intend to gain
an in-depth insight into QoL issues for RACF
residents with dementia. Preliminary results
will be available at the time of the conference
for discussion and reflection.
The outcomes of this research should help
inform the development of strategies,
programs and approaches to care that will
optimize the experience of people with
dementia in RACFs, and ensure that they
receive care designed to optimize quality of
life.
