This presentation will describe the background,
development and current phase of a project
to promote advance care planning that was
funded through the Dementia Consumer
Research Network within Alzheimer's
Australia.
Advance care planning (ACP) involves a person
thinking about and communicating to others
how they would like to be treated in the future
if they have a condition where they can no
longer speak for themselves. It is a particularly
important issue within dementia care because
many people will lose the capacity to make
their own decisions during their dementia
journey.
A consortium of experts in the fields of
dementia and ACP has developed a nationally-
focused website, and plans to promote this
through a broadly based social marketing
campaign. The project has undertaken
extensive consultations with consumers
and professionals across Australia as well
as conducting an online survey with 249
respondents.
Key aspects of the website are: it moves
beyond providing information to include
a number of templates that will promote
communication and help users take action
related to planning ahead; it will provide
information for people living with dementia and
their family carers, healthcare professionals
and the general community; and it has
information and resources about planning
ahead that is relevant for each of the States
and Territories.
The project will use a social marketing
campaign that will enlist a number of key
State and National organisations as campaign
supporters to promote a set of core messages
about ACP and the website.

Photographs have the capacity to not only
be a creative medium, but to also record
experiences and promote change. During a
workplace program for people with younger
onset dementia, Photovoice has been used
as one of the evaluation strategies. Side by
Side is an innovative workplace program for
people with younger onset dementia, where
individuals work one day a week alongside
a work buddy in a large hardware store. The
program provides meaningful activities and
social engagement for the participants, while
also offering a unique form of respite and an
opportunity for public education.
Photovoice is a relatively new qualitative
research method. It is a catalyst for discussion
and visually documenting experiences using
an artistic medium. It allows evaluation with
people, rather than on people. It is a method
that allows people to record and communicate
difficult to describe situations in a way that can
promote empathy and understanding.
