Argo Star
Tehmina Sunny
Wonderwomen are women who are chasing their dreams and pursuing their passion with tenacity and drive
and UK born, Hollywood actress Tehmina Sunny is one woman who is going from strength to strength in her
chosen field. A seasoned professional from a very young age, Tehmina gained a prestigious scholarship to play
the violin, viola and piano. However, her talents far transcended music and as well as succeeding in the arts she
also excelled in academia. So how did this Croydon born beauty make the successful transition from books to
the Hollywood screens? Read our exclusive interview to find out how......
Tehmina, firstly let me congratulate you on your
starring role in the Hollywood Blockbuster Argo.
When you first signed up to star in the movie, did you
realise just how successful it was going to be?
I remember reading the script thinking, wow what an
amazing storyline. I really wanted to be involved and
be a part of the project. But in terms of thinking how
successful it would be, it has blown my mind. I really
didn't expect it, but I am thrilled nonetheless.
What was the audition process like for Argo and what
were the highlights of working on
the movie?
The audition process was straight
forward and not at all stressful.
How it works normally is that my
team submit me for a role and if I
am accepted by the casting office,
I meet the casting director and
audition. This was exact process for Argo. Most of the
time, I sit back and hope it works out (Laughs) Being
a part of this film was phenomenal but the ultimate
highlight was working with Ben Affleck.
What was it like working with Ben Affleck and other
cast members?
I have always admired Ben's work as an Actor &
Director. To act with and be directed by him was a
dream come true. I really enjoyed spending time with
the cast. They were friendly and extremely talented.
I learned a great amount from them and I am truly
honoured for what opportunities it has brought my way.
I am pleased to see more and more Asian women
securing major roles in Hollywood movies, but this
hasn't always been the case. Have you found your
ethnicity has helped or hindered your progress in the
entertainment world?
I have to say that it is most definitely without a doubt
improving within the entertainment industry as whole.
It is true; it has been difficult over the years for actresses
from diverse backgrounds. However, with the massive
success of films such as Slumdog
Millionaire & Life of Pi, the doors
continue to open. It really is an
exciting time in movies right now.
These projects have also opened up
roles for TV projects too. I will say
that I still feel more can be done,
but without any doubt, each year, it
gets better and better.
Eastern Eye Magazine listed you as being `1 of 12 Brit
Asian entertainers who are making major waves in the
industry'. How proud are you of your achievements to
date as a female and Asian performer?
I am very honoured and grateful for the recognition. It is
all about the work and that is what I love. Being a story
teller and using myself as a vessel to tell the story. Being
recognised for something you are passionate about only
drives and encourages you to keep going. I am always
inspired by such encouragement and support.
"I don't believe in
giving up or giving
in and I encourage
others to do the same."
