Where Do I Start?
· Firstly, you need to go through all your old letters
and statements to see if you have any PPI charges on
any accounts that have been active within the last six
years. For example, if you took out a credit card in
2001, but only cleared the balance in 2009, this is still
eligible to make a claim.
· If you are unable to locate your paperwork you can
also contact the finance provider directly, however
not all lenders operate in the same way.
· If you would like to retrieve old statements, the
provider is obligated to provide you with this
information under the Consumer Credit Act, usually
at a small charge.
·For those who cannot remember all the previous
accounts they have had, you can request this
information from reputable sites like Equifax and
Experian.
· Once you have gathered all the necessary
information, some companies will simply deal with
your complaint over the telephone. Others will
require you to send a letter.
· You can download free template letters online,
which allows you to insert your personal details and
provides you with different statements relating to
why you think you should never have been sold PPI.
· If you are not happy with the bank or company's
response or they have not contacted you back after
eight weeks of the case being opened, you can
contact the Financial Ombudsman Service. They are
the official, independent service that looks into cases
against finance providers. I would 100% recommend
customers to contact them via their website or over
the phone if you strongly believe you are entitled to
repayment charges; especially as it is a free service.
There are still so many people out there that are
successfully winning back their money on their
own, so what are you waiting for? There is no need
to seek the help of these companies that will take a
percentage of your cash. The last advert I saw on the
TV said they charged 30% if they won the case on
your behalf. To put 30% fee into perspective, if you
received £5000 from your bank, this company would
take £1500 from it for doing something you could do
for free.
