Marilyn's personal makeup artist Allan 'Whitey' Snyder
stayed with her for her entire career, and is known for
creating her timeless signature look that we all know and
love. He relied heavily on contouring and highlighting,
and found ways to accentuate her eyes to make them
look more feline and large.
How to recreate Marilyn's look:
Skin: During the 50's era it was fashionable to have
flawless skin, which can be achieved by using full
coverage foundation and concealer. Be sure to add
concealer around the eyes (preferably in a shade lighter
than your skin tone for Marilyn's look) and to blend it all
down the jaw and neck.
Contouring: Marilyn was a massive fan of contouring as
she disliked her wide forehead and thought she had a
bulbous nose (crazy woman!). Contour the areas of the
face that would naturally have existing shadows with a
matte bronzer, so this would be under the jawline, under
the cheekbones, the temples blending upwards into the
hairline, and down the sides of the nose. Do make sure
you blend really REALLY well, or you could look like
you have dirt on your face. We don't want that do we?
Highlighting: Highlight areas of the face such as centre
of forehead, under the brow bone, down the nose and
cheekbones for a gorgeous healthy sheen. You can
use a shimmery powder highlighter or a cream based
highlighter.
Eyebrows: To draw attention away from a wide
forehead and widen the eyes, Marilyn liked to have
quite a prominent arch in her brows almost in the
centre like an upside down 'V'. You can achieve this
by using a pencil or using eyeshadow that matches
the colour of your brows, by lifting the centre of your
brows from the top of your brow, creating an arch if
you don't have one.
Eyes: Apply a vanilla shade of shadow over the eyelid,
bringing it into the tear duct area. Next sweep a
light brown shadow through your crease, and blend
outwards. Tap the centre of the lid with a frosted white
for extra glamour. To line the upper lid use a brown
liner near the lashes, extending outwards creating a
slight flick once you reach the corner. For the lower
lashes Marilyn's makeup artist would `fake' longer
lashes by using a brown pencil liner on the outer
corner creating `fake shadows' from her lashes. He
would then line her water line with a white pencil to
brighten the eyes, but you might want to try this with
a more flesh coloured pencil for a more natural effect.
Next, coat lashes with mascara, and apply strip lashes to
the outer corners to create Marilyn's feline flutter.
Beauty mark: This is my favourite part! You can use a
black eyeliner pencil, but I think a brown one is more
natural (or even better a brown eyeshadow applied with
a lip brush) and dot your beauty mark onto your skin.
Make sure to powder so that it stays put.
Lips: For Marilyn's signature red lips, Snyder would
use a combination of different reds to achieve the exact
shade desired, but to make it easier on you, use a dark
red lip liner just outside the lip line (that white line
that surrounds your lips naturally can be used as your
guide) then fill the lips in with a blue toned red lipstick.
Highlight your cupids bow with the white/flesh toned
pencil you used on your eyes, or with a highlighter of
your choice. Dab some clear or red lipgloss to the centre
of your lips, and pout like a pro!
