individual sound and we have already got that, and
it hasn't been an overnight thing to get that," says Jan
reflecting on why they have been so successful over the
years.
Although it is fair to say the Heavies have a very unique
sound, Jan tells me that this comes from them being
fans of music and being inspired by other artists, "If
you are an artist or involved with communicating with
other people; which essentially is what making music
is. The process of listening to music is so important, to
me anyway, because it taught me everything I know. I
started off as a fan of music and still very much am a
fan." Citing artists such as Hiatus Kaiyote, Little Dragon,
Bluey Robinson, Jamiroquai, Jill Scott and Jneiro Jarel as
people who he listens to, it is clear that being eclectic has
certainly influenced the sound that many people know
and love from the Brand New Heavies.
Sunshine, is the Heavies' comeback single featuring
vocals from N'dea Davenport. Filmed at Trinidad
Carnival, the video has that feel good vibe we would
expect from anything the Brand New Heavies put their
name to.
The new album, Forward, is released on 6 May and the
Heavies are currently in the process of touring, so look
out for them in a town near you.
