IP protection
The degree of protection from ingress of foreign bodies and liquids, and the prevention of a person from touching live or
moving parts, are indicated by the two digits in the IP code detailed below. For rotating electrical machines the classifi cation
is recognised internationally and is described in detail in EN 60034-:2001.
First (IP) Number
Protection against solid foreign objects
IP
Protection of the machine from harmful ingress of solid foreign objects
Prevention of a person from touching
live or moving parts:
0
No protection
No prevention
1
Protected from solid objects greater than 0 mm diameter
No access for a part of the human body
such as a hand
2
Protected from solid objects greater than 12 mm diameter
No access for a part of the human body
such as a fi nger
3
Protected from solid objects greater than 2. mm diameter
No access for a hand-held object such as
a small tool 2. mm diameter
4
Protected from solid objects greater than 1 mm diameter
No access for a hand-held object such as
a wire 1 mm diameter
Protection from dust (limited ingress with no harmful effects is permitted)
No access to live or moving parts
6
Totally protected from ingress of dust
No access to live or moving parts
If an external fan is protected by a guard from solid objects greater than 12 mm diameter and the remainder of the motor
meets a higher IP rating then the higher IP rating may be claimed.
A smooth rotating shaft is not considered dangerous.
It is the responsibility of the customer or machine builder to ensure that any exposed shafts or couplings which are intended to
allow the machine to be integrated into an assembly or fi nished product are appropriately protected.
Second (IP) Number
Protection of the machine from harmful ingress of water (limited ingress with no harmful effects is permitted)
IP
