Educational Technology who will develop a com-
prehensive technology plan. This will involve a
more focussed use of technology, linked clearly to
the learning outcomes, and with professional devel-
opment for teachers. We will be taking a pro-active
approach to developing students' critical-thinking
skills, which have become all the more important
with the expansion of technology and access to in-
formation. To support our expansion in technology,
we are upgrading our network infrastructure. This is
an extensive project which will also facilitate the
enhancement of our security systems. Student
safety is of paramount importance and we are
upgrading our security systems and infrastructure
to ensure students can learn in a secure environment.
What is your biggest strength?
Being very calm really helps. Being able to juggle
the many demands, but always keep a focus on
what's really important. I have good judgement.
Often my instincts will be pretty spot-on in many
situations. It's something Ted often says to me. It's
probably the most important thing about being a
Head. You often don't have time to really look into
or weigh up all the different factors, so you go with
your instincts quite a lot.
Can you describe your leadership style?
I would say I'm consultative, but decisive. I
certainly don't see myself as the expert on everything
--you can't be, nobody can be. So I believe you
have to grow your leaders and teachers to be the
best they can be and then allow them to do their
jobs. If you give people the autonomy to perform
to the highest level, they often will. In a small
community like Bermuda, you also need to have
people getting along with each other. We may not
always agree, but there needs to be a process by
which people feel they've been heard, that they've
had input into decisions. You may not always
choose the particular route they would prefer, but
if they feel there's been a genuine consultation
process, I think people can have buy-in.
Ted has said one of the things he admires in you is
that you're not afraid to make difficult decisions.
No, I'm not, and I believe in being very honest with
people as well. I think people respect that. Nobody's
perfect all of the time, so inevitably in my position
you have to have some tough conversations with
people and I believe there is a way to do that which
can be direct and doesn't skirt the issue, but allows
the person to retain their dignity. That's very
