A total of 61 S10 students braved a weekend of lashing rain and
high winds in March to complete their Duke of Edinburgh Bronze
expedition. "It was more like an expedition on Dartmoor or Exmoor
than Bermuda!" reported Saltus coordinators for the programme,
Peter Martin
and
Patrick Mahon
. Another 20 students, this time
from S11, successfully finished their Duke of Edinburgh Silver
expedition with two nights of camping and 45 kilometres of walking
over three days. Secondary staff
Elizabeth Morton
,
Kerry Southgate
and
Bruce Sinclair
assisted the effort, overseeing the campsite on
Darrell's Island in the Great Sound

Foundation. This year, some 46 students, teachers and parents went under the scissors
in the Upper Primary Hall and at a public BAA event--raising a whopping $125,000

Saltus was one of eight participating
schools to win a $30,000 award in
PartnerRe's annual Dollars for Hours
initiative. Thirty Saltus students spent
two Saturdays working at WindReach
Recreational Village, removing invasive
shrubs and planting a community garden,
led by Secondary teacher
Steve Briggs
.
They learned how to manage indigenous
ecosystems and use sustainable gardening
methods. The funds will help provide
new shade on the Gosling Piazza.
