Choosing a career has been tricky for Head Boy Mark Godfrey, The scholarathlete has
represented Saltus and Bermuda with so diverse a range of talents, from cycling to student
investment strategising, that he found himself in the happy conundrum of struggling to
narrow down wide-open possibilities. He finally zeroed in on law, thanks to one undeniable
proclivity. "I like arguing," he smiles, "so I figured it would be something I'd be good at."
Nominated along with several fellow SGY2s this year for the Academic category in the
Outstanding Teen Awards, Mark, who has played football for nine seasons and was a
national cyclist at last fall's Junior Caribbean Championships, has enjoyed the schedule-
packed, 13-year ride from Cavendish to college.
"For me, Saltus wasn't all about academics," he says. "There are always teachers trying to
recruit you for extracurricular activities--they try to get you to have as diverse an experience
at school as possible. I plan to continue that at university--I want to join clubs, societies,
community efforts."
That doesn't surprise his teachers, who say his dedication has made them proud. "I find
him to be a very articulate, mature and sophisticated young man," notes Mark's advisor
Bruce Sinclair. "He is especially well-rounded and able to carry out an interesting and
thought-provoking conversation in many different areas."
Accepted on full scholarship to King's College London, he is looking forward to
following in the footsteps of his older brother Matthew ('05), a lawyer. Two more
brothers, Thomas ('08), an engineer, and Alex (2010), a catastrophe analyst, are
also his role models. "I guess I have a desire to do well in everything. Having
older brothers, I'm very competitive--I'm always pushing harder and harder,"
says Mark, who also has a younger sister, S9 Jessie.
"I definitely understand what people talk about now -- that all through
high school you can't wait to leave, to get to university, and then when you
finally get to your senior year, you start getting nostalgic," he adds. "But
I'm excited about what's ahead."
