COVER STORY
AS INCOMING Head of School this September, British-born Claire
Charlemagne, 38, will be the 10th person to lead Saltus--and the first
woman in that role. Articulate, candid, thoughtful and straightforward,
she is outspokenly proud of Saltus and a self-confessed champion of its
students. The mother of two young children, she has spent the past 11
years at Saltus as a member of faculty, running the Modern Languages
Department and, under Ted Staunton's tenure, playing a pivotal role in
boosting academic performance and shaping strategic plans for the
School's future as Director of Studies and, since 2011, Deputy Head.
As she prepares to take on her biggest challenge yet, she speaks to
ROSEMARY JONES about her achievements to date, her immediate
wish-list, and her dream to make Saltus "the best school on the Island."
