Even before she was voted Bermuda's overall Outstanding Teen of 2013, the Island got a
taste of Latonia Fray's tenacity when she was booked for a cell phone infraction on her
motorcycle and made the front page of the daily paper by defending herself--and winning the
case. "It was just two days after they passed the 2011 law banning earphones while driving,"
she says, "and no one really understood it properly. I discovered the police officer had actually
booked me under the wrong law. I told the magistrate, `If the Ministry can't interpret this
correctly, how is a 16-year-old supposed to?'" The case was thrown out when the cop
admitted he hadn't even seen the offending device.
What gives Saltus's Head Girl her gumption? "Ambition," she says. "I'm a perfectionist--I
think I get that from my mother. I'm just hungry for achievement and success." Accepted into
Philadelphia's Drexel University with a $15,000 scholarship offer, Latonia is already eager to
enter the institution's brand new School of Business "which my graduating class will be
the first to experience." She hopes to study Economics and become a financial analyst.
A competitive field-hockey goalie, who also plays all-stars volleyball, softball and
netball, organises youth conferences, achieved her Silver Duke of Edinburgh
Award, and represented Saltus in Debate and at this spring's United Nations
Youth Convention, Latonia credits Saltus faculty for backing her boundless drive.
"Saltus has always had activities and programmes you could engage in to
help to progress as a person," she says. "The teachers have been so supportive
through my years here. If you ever needed advice or support, they gave it. My
Economics teacher, Mr. Hermann-Smith, probably knows me better than my
parents--he's the one who says, `You're stressed, go home, you're going to
get sick!' "It's emotional to be leaving," she admits. "But the memories here
will forever stay in my heart."
