NEW STAFF APPOINTMENTS Jon Beard has been appointed Director of Alumni Relations. This is a part-time position (full-time from September 2011), which will have Jon concentrating on the rejuvenation of the Saltus Alumni Association. With his institutional memory going back a few years—34 years at Saltus!—his interest in the welfare of all Saltus graduates and his engaging personality, Jon is the perfect person to achieve this goal. The rest of his time will be helping the new Director of the Saltus Graduate Years Programme and see to the needs of our most senior students. Jon will continue to have an office in the Gosling Centre. Nicole ChichonDeSilva has been appointed Director of the Saltus Graduate Years Programme. In her role as Deputy Head of SGY, Nicole has familiarised herself with every aspect of the programme. She is conscientious and reliable and admired and respected by SGY students. Karen Lusher has been appointed Director of the Centre for Learning from September 1, 2011. Karen has been on the Saltus faculty since 2000, as an Upper Primary Teacher and Learning Specialist for the Secondary Department. Her academic qualifications include a Bachelor of Science degree in Speech and Language Disorders and her Master of Education degree in Elementary Education. She has accumulated a significant number of hours of postgraduate studies towards her PhD in Educational Psychology. S A LT U S M A G A Z I N E Lisa Maule has been named Head of Performing Arts, a newly-created department encompassing music and drama. This position becomes effective September 1. Lisa has been on the Saltus music department staff since 1991 as a Teacher of Instrumental Music Dal Minors’ responsibilities as Director of Studies have been expanded to include administrative support for Upper and Lower Primary Departments. While her primary focus will continue to be on teaching and learning and the smooth functioning of the curriculum, she will assist the new directors in a multitude of areas. (Dal will have an office in both Primary Departments.) Michael Hooper (1979) joined the Design Technology department this year as a technician, assisting teachers and students with curriculum projects. Before joining Saltus, Mike was a “ Jack of all trades,” designing and building homes and constructing custom kitchens with specialised cabinetry. In 2008, he restored the Deliverance replica at Ordinance Island. He also represented Bermuda at the 2001 Smithsonian Folklife Festival in Washington DC as one of a unique breed of traditional boat-builders. His passion has been building model ships, as well as miniature furniture from scratch. 7 Shelly Sayers has been appointed Director of the Lower Primary Department. Her friendly disposition and supportive nature is a perfect fit for our youngest students. Shelly and Tracy have an excellent working relationship, which will benefit both departments. Tracy Renaud has been appointed Director of the Upper Primary Department. Her experience in both sections of Primary, and her ability to relate well with our parents and students in those years, will make for stability and a smooth leadership transition at this important level of the school. Amanda Skinner has been named Coordinator of the Saltus Ambassador Programme, a new initiative to enhance communications between parents and the School. She will field concerns of both prospective and current parents, and help communicate positive news about the School and its programmes throughout the community. Amanda’s office is in the ground floor of the North Tower at Woodlands. (Woodwind). During her 20-year tenure, the music programme has grown considerably and much of the credit for this development is due to Lisa’s energy and dedication. The Jazz Band, in particular, enjoys a significant reputation in the wider community, helping Saltus advertise its Music programme as a centre of excellence and attract top students. Lisa has also supported the Drama department as a musical director.
