SALTUS STARS COMMUNITY Duke of Edinburgh awards A total 39 Saltus students and one alum received Duke of Edinburgh Awards this school year. Eleven students earned Silver Awards and 28 got their Bronze. SGY (’10) graduate Arthur Begeman, now at Queen’s University, Kingston, Ont., achieved a Gold Award. Secondary Geography Head Dan Dorrington, who oversees the progamme at Saltus, says 101 more students are currently signed up for the Bronze, Silver and Gold Awards this year. Some 49 S10 students are participating in the Bronze Award (72 percent of the year group), 48 of S11s in the Silver Award (64 percent of the year group), and four SGY1s are off to Germany this summer to tackle Gold Award challenges. 2010 Silver awardees: Nicholas 14 2010 Bronze awardees: Tomas Amaral, Steven Armstrong, Barlaba, Nicholas Bergquist, Madeleine Brash, Mitchell Campbell, Miles Cave, Peter Cooper, Christopher Cooper, Alexander Davis, Kenedi Edwards, Latonia Fray, Mark Godfrey, Ashley Greenidge, Sarai Hines, Gianni Nesbeth, Fabio Pacheco, Aaron Railton, Michaela Ratteray, Jordan Rowse, Ben Sayers, Yanna Smith, Leandra Stracquadanio, Zindziswa Swan, McKenzie Taggett, Jenny Tester and Kiara Wilkinson. SGY2 Emily Chadderton received a Young Environmentalist Award from the Bermuda National Trust. The honour, presented last fall, marked Emily’s volunteer work in helping with environmental cleanups and fundraising for the Trust and the community.
