Helping hand for others Our Saltus mission statement promises “service to others”— and students, parents and staff have done their part for those in need. Among beneficiary charities this year are: Bermuda Cancer & Health Centre Students and staff raised $5,076 to fight breast cancer, with a fundraising walk, a School-wide Denim Day, and a cupcake sale. Funds helped upgrade diagnostic equipment and patientsupport system. The Reading Clinic Upper and Lower Primary Departments enjoyed a “PJs/Slippers & Bedtime Story Day” that raised $1,561, half for The Reading Clinic, which helps kids with literacy difficulties, and the rest for a guided-reading workshop for Primary staff. Bermuda Red Cross Secondary student scribes of our online newspaper Saltus Shaker raised more than $270 in a bake-sale to help fight Haiti’s cholera outbreak. S11 Michaela Ratteray contributed an additional $700 for the cause, which was matched fourfold by her mother’s employer RenaissanceRe, which contributed $2,800—for a whopping total of $3,771. Bermuda Diabetes Association Students wore “Denim for Diabetes,” raising $2,375 to raise awareness and help fight the disease. Sunshine League Children’s Home Our Christmastime “Carols for All” concert at St. John’s Church collected $1,672 for the Pembroke home for displaced youth. The Cornerstone Foundation Lower Primary students gave $2,107 from their Christmas concerts to the Cornerstone Foundation’s food programme for children in Haiti. Secondary ICT Head Eric Totten estimates the total raised for the St. Baldrick’s Foundation by Saltus staff and students will be $45,000; Nicholas Bergquist raised over $14,100 for PALS.
