Daniel Stovell / ’81
Business before fun
IN 1981, deputy Head Boy dr. daniel Stovell graduated from the Senior Year Programme (now SGY). Today, at 46, he runs the diagnostic Imaging department at the King Edward VII Memorial Hospital, ground zero for the Island’s x-rays, CatScans, ultrasounds, mammograms, MRI scans, nuclear medicine and bone density testing. Not a big surprise, since his favourite subject at Saltus was always Biology. “I had many good teachers at Saltus, but Ms. Lodge, my first Biology teacher, stands out a little more than the others,” daniel explains. “Also, I remember Jon Beard was always very supportive and helpful with advice if we had any questions.” Today at KEMH, daniel helps coordinate a staff of roughly 60 people. He has numerous administrative duties, but is also one of four radiologists who interpret all images performed on patients and, in certain cases, he performs procedures on patients himself. “I enjoy going to work every day,” he says. “I get to work with great co-workers, and most people are very thankful for the work we do. There are, of course, tougher days, where sometimes I have to give bad news to patients and their families.” He credits Saltus with providing him with a sturdy foundation on which to build his academic education. “We did AP [Advanced Placement] courses, which meant I was already comfortable with college-level studies, and felt I had more confidence, and that I had an advantage over other students. Independent study and self-motivation were developed during the Senior Year Programme.” After finishing high-school, he went on to gain an Associate Arts degree from Mitchell College, in New London, CT in 1983; a BSc in Biology from Elizabethtown College, Elizabethtown, PA in 1986, and an Md from Howard University, Washington, dC, in 1990. He remained at Howard to complete an internship and later his radiology residency, until June 1995, at Howard University Hospital. daniel says a medical career was always in the cards for him and if he hadn’t become interested in radiology, he might have gone for a career as a pharmacist or laboratory technologist.

His daughter Raisa already seems to be following in her father’s footsteps. She graduated from Saltus in 2008 and is currently in her sophomore year at Howard University studying in a Biology major honours (pre-med) programme. “We sent her to Saltus because we had confidence the school would push her to be the best she could be,” daniel says. “Since Saltus started taking female students, there have been many very successful students of both genders. “I am lucky to have a very close family—and family is the most important thing in my life… followed by sports!” does he have any advice for Saltus students today? “At school or work, take care of business first, then have fun after. don’t get distracted. Believe in yourself. Go for your dreams—if you don’t try, you will never make it.” —Helen Jardine
