SALTUS STARS school life Outstanding SGY2 Arielle DeSilva Middle Years prefects For the first time this year, the Secondary Department chose students from Years 7 to 9 to be Middle Years prefects. Their role is to help keep discipline, aid staff, support younger students, organise events and represent Saltus in the community. The prefects are: S9 Ambassadors Daniel Oatley and Nalani Dowling; S9 Leaders Nicholas Pell, Zureena Rubaine, Liam Evans, Jade Belboda, Nathaniel Martin, Shaundrea Washington, Billy Boyle and Zoe Simmons; S8 Leaders Sam Wehmeyer, Elizabeth Parsons, Tyler Irby, CeCi Wollmann, Keaton Pewter, Katelyn Thompson, Tucker Powell and Mikaela Buryj; and S7 Leaders Emily Peters, Dylan Powell, Kayla Dowling, Nathan Titterton, Tori Daniels, Bryce Gonsalves, Ajai Peets and James Robertson. was honoured at Teen Services’ Outstanding Teen Awards 2011. Arielle won the Perseverance Award for overcoming extremely challenging times after her sister, Saltus alum Lori Mello (’00), died of cancer in 2007. The judges cited Arielle’s courage in facing hardship head-on by seeking help and support, noting she had become a “happy, well-adjusted young lady.” Music award S10 Alex Fox was named recipient of the Michelle Outerbridge Musical Opportunity Award for the second year. Alex received $1,000 towards percussion lessons. He is a violinist and plays in several School ensembles, including the Saltus Jazz Band. The award commemorates the memory of Michelle, a Saltus graduate gifted in music and debating, who died in 2000 (see tributes, page 37). SGY2 Erik Pearson (left), graduating in June, has been accepted into the prestigious Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and scored a perfect 800 on his Math SAT. SGY1 Nic Barton also hopes to apply to MIT next year; he has passed four A-Level Math modules with “A” grades in each.
