ALUMNI
Class of 1980 30-year reunion
The Class of 1980 reunited (“and it feels so good”) to celebrate 30 years of life after Saltus Senior Year (now SGY). More than 100 alumni and spouses enjoyed two nights of festivities including a poolside cocktail party hosted by Mark Diel at his Southampton home, followed the next evening by a moonlit dinner at Tucker’s Point Beach Club. Teachers Malcolm Durrant, Bill Duncan and Mary Murray joined former students for dinner, regaling them with humorous recollections. Several Senior Year classmates flew in from overseas, including Kevin Hendrickson, Susan Babensee, Benson Leitch, Cristina (Woods) Wineinger, Macky Wilson, Sarah (McLendon) Stokes, Katrine (Misick) Patterson and Susan Lloyd. Alums had so much fun, they agreed to do it all again in five years’ time. —Brian Patterson, Elizabeth (Bickley) Schafer and Julie (Lobb) Preece
SENIOR YEAR COCKTAIL PARTY
By Henry Ziegler Former Head of Senior Year THE SENIOR YEAR Cocktail Party still brings out the best of times gone by. Because of windy weather, last year’s was held inside Woodlands, which allowed Peter Smith (’75–’76) to remind us this was not the first time he was “full hot” in the Headmaster’s Office. Wife Maria dragged him away long after the party officially ended, while Pippa Barritt made sure Fred (also ’75–’76) also got out in one piece. The class was well represented, with Rick Manuel and Doug Hillen holding up the bar while Kevin “Hazard” Dill won the Long-Distance Award, having flown from Toronto. The Newcomer Award went to Linda Selley (Down), who made it for the first time, thus keeping the same percentage of attendance she earned in 1974. Next year she’ll “do better.” I think I’ve heard that from her (and others) before… Thanks to [former UP PE teacher] Martin Allen, the book on Academicals S A LT U S M A G A Z I N E Football Club was available to prove to my son Carl and daughter-in-law Kat that I actually did play back in the day, while [former UP teacher] Mark Beasley swears he is 69 years old— must be the lack of stress that department provided. At one point, it seemed like we were having a staff meeting, with Jean Myerscough (Pimm)—(Geography, BHS Head); Reid Kempe—(English), Bill Duncan —(Music), Steve Masters—(Art), Bruce Lines—(Biology), Malcolm Durrant—(History, Head of Senior Year), all ready to invigilate the SATs. New Headmaster Ted Staunton also circulated, learning stories he probably wish he hadn’t! Yearbooks from back then were also available for people to remind themselves of their (not-so) misspent youth. Fossi (’76–’77) showed up without his Moby due to a detached retina, but he sure had a sporty metallic eyepatch; Derrick Binns showed up with Nicky O’Leary, or perhaps it was the other way around. And Craig Tucker made his presence felt—much less of a man today than he was even a year ago (that I could have the same determination when it comes to keeping to a diet. Way to go, Craig!) Philip Smith (’77–’78) and Vance Campbell tried to convince me their class beat the teachers in the annual football match, but Carlos “The Flea” Lee and Cathy Manuel were there to set them straight. Jon Beard, Head of Senior Graduate Years (Senior Year to those of us from the last millennium), would have also been there to tell Vance and Philip the bitter truth, but he was caught up in London due to the volcano—what an excuse! Even John Edmunds, in good form with his lovely spouse, never came up with a story like that to miss school! And from the later years, Kevin Lambert, Oscar Andrade, and others discussed the vagaries of the Bermudian economy. Many thanks to Berta BarretoHogan for organising the event. 33
