Security-as-a-Service
from a commodity driven to a service oriented market

True cost savings and ROI
 the drivers for growth
2
013 might be
another year of
concern regarding the global economy. How-
ever, despite the turbulence, there are still many
drivers that will contribute a decent growth for
the security technology market...
An important driving force for the growth of
the security technology market is the increased
threat within today's private and public sectors
and society's lack of resources to convention-
ally fight back. Today police forces need to
co-operate with private security companies and
moreover, society needs to invest in security
technology that can save manpower costs, effi-
ciently prevent and detect crimes and supply the
justice systems with visual, biometric or other
proof in order to convict criminals and sentence
them in court.
Costs for crimes are high and to fight crime
successfully without using technology is an
impossible task. So there is no doubt that the se-
curity technology market will continue to grow,
despite these harsh times in the world economy.
The need for security, safety and cost saving is
too strong, and creates the drive and momentum
to increase the demand for security technology
solutions.
The on-going migration from analogue to
digital technology is another important drive
for growth, especially in the camera surveil-
lance market segment. IP-cameras have become
increasingly more common, but still await the
big boom in some developed security markets,
like in the UK, where the penetration of IP
cameras today is approximately 15 per cent. This
indicates the potential for continuous growth in
the CCTV sector.
The challenge for the security industry
is to communicate the advantages that their
technology solutions can offer in terms of cost
savings and ROI. The customer perspective
has to be focused which means that suppliers
must demonstrate that their suggested security
measures are proven cost cutting strategies for all
kinds of businesses. Security must be regarded
as an added value to the working environment.
The message is simple, security installations offer
opportunities for better finances and security
companies should be seen as their customer's
partner in a united aim to improve or at least
secure profit and cost efficiency. With this in
mind, today's harsh economic reality is not
enough to stop the security technology market
from growth.
It is in the security industry's interest to boost
effective communication regarding the advan-
tages of security technology and to actively use
the support of security trade publications to this
end. In addition providers of security products
and services need to strengthen their brands
to meet the head on challenge of increasingly
tougher competition. An important resource for
this kind of knowledge exchange and advertising
is of course this printed publication Detektor
that enters its 25th year as an important security
trade magazine on the market.
We certainly look forward to serving our
readers with interesting information about
what´s going on within the security technology
market during this new exciting year 2013.
