Smallest UHF reader
offers 2 metre range
Groenlo, The Netherlands
Nedap
is introducing a ground-
breaking the Upass Access UHF
reader for hands-free building ac-
cess, which reads normal personal
access badges at a distance of up to
2 metres.
It operates with passive UHF
cards (EPC GEN 2) and supports
combi cards. Upass Access is
an ideal solution for doors that
require convenience and security,
such as office doors, high volume
entrances, and disabled access.
This ultra small reader is designed
to mount on standard door mul-
lions and is easy to integrate with
any type of security system.
Until now, the access control
industry has been largely focused
on the security aspect of readers,
tags and cards. The convenience
element has, for the most part,
been somewhat disregarded.
Existing technologies for more
convenient long read range are
mainly battery powered, have
large reader antennas, or involve
proprietary technology. With the
introduction of Upass Access these
objections against widespread use
of long range RFID can finally be
left in the past.
With Upass Access, Nedap is
aiming to add convenience and
ease of use as the new dimension
in building access control. This
offers security managers the abil-
ity to select the best appropriate
access control solution for each
individual situation:
security when nec-
essary, convenience
whenever possible.
Upass Access is
applicable in many
situations, such as
typical hands-free
building access for
staff in hospitals
and lab clean-
rooms, wheelchair users, em-
ployees in warehouses, and more
high volume entrances in office
buildings and at universities.
The Upass Access contains an
advanced and patented antenna
design. The small shaped reader
(15 cm height x 5 cm width x 4
cm depth) is specifically designed
for doorpost mounting, has a read
range up to 2 metres (6 feet), and
supports reading battery-less UHF
(EPC Gen II) access control cards.
Nedap's portfolio holds various
types of combi cards that combine
UHF with LEGIC card technol-
ogy. The new Upass Access reader
supports all common security
industry standards for communi-
cation with access control systems.
The reader can be used indoors
and outdoors with an IP65 rating,
supports Wiegand connections as
well as RS485, Magstripe and RF.
There is also a convenient 3 colour
LED indication and audible
beeper indication.

Urmet releases a market first
Great Notley, Essex (UK)
Door-entry and access control
specialist Urmet Domus have
launched their new full IP touch-
screen monitor, which has already
been specified and installed across
London in numerous high-volume
and landmark residential build-
ings.
The new monitor, the first in a
line of exciting product launches
planned by Urmet in 2013, is
packed with valuable features and
is now setting the benchmark in
the door-entry sector. Accord-
ing to the company, the product,
designed mainly for large-scale
residential developments, is cur-
rently the only full IP PoE 7"
touch-screen with dual LAN ports
on the market with no other
cabling infrastructure required
other than the existing network
cable within the building.
Urmet's new 7" touch-screen
Imodo, is Mac addressable and
offers the user a wealth of ad-
ditional features that have until
now only been conceptual. The
stylish design of Urmet's Imodo
touch-screen terminal is instantly
recognisable as an Urmet product.
Once you explore the unit's
capability and exactly what it has
to offer, it soon becomes apparent
that this device can do so much
more than simply open and close
doors.
Some of the features of Imodo,
in addition to the regular func-
tions such as call to concierge,
panic alarms
and video
messaging,
include Dual
LAN Port
this not only
connects the
touch-screen
to the IPervoice building network,
but the second port also allows
third-party home automation in-
tegration. Alternatively, the second
LAN port can connect straight
into a home router, providing
users with a device that will allow
them to browse the Internet.
WIFI is a built in feature of the
Imodo and allows ease of connec-
tion to the home area network and
using the second LAN port it is
possible to integrate the iMODO
with other third-party home auto-
mation systems. Power over Eth-
ernet allows the door-entry unit to
be powered via the network switch
and therefore requires no separate
power supply unit in the apart-
ment. It also makes the connec-
tion of the Imodo to the building
network without the need of any
other dedicated cabling. Full IP is
available by simply connecting the
Imodo onto the building VLAN.
This much-anticipated launch
is believed by Urmet to herald a
new era in the video door-entry
market, as both installers and
end-users are now recognising the
benefits that a full-IP system has
to offer.
Videotec launches Hi POE IPM housing
Schio, Italy
Designed to meet the most up-to-
date market requirements, the new
generation of housings from Video
tec
combine innovative intelligent
control technology and advanced
features for the protection and
optimal function of IP cameras.
These new housings incorpo-
rate the latest Videotec IPM (Intel-
ligent Power Management) system,
which makes the most of PoE
and Hi-PoE technology, using the
power provided by the Ethernet
cable as the sole power source for
all managed devices. The result is a
greater reliability and flexibility of
the network system in addition to
simplifying installation operations
and reducing costs.
The Hi-PoE IPM system
automatically detects all options
present, such as heating, fan and
illuminator and then automatically
performs a power balance and thus
an appropriate distribution of the
same to the connected devices.
This ensures optimum operation of
the IP camera from -30°C to 60°C,
with temperature control and cold
start (from low temperatures).
IPM technology will be applied
to the HOV and VERSO Hi-PoE
housing ranges. These popular
housings are already installed in
various projects all over the world
and satisfy the requirements of
an extremely broad range of ap-
plications, protecting cameras and
thereby ensuring the best perfor-
mance with the available options:
heating for demisting and de-icing
glass and ventilation with a double
air filter.
The IPM system offers the
possibility of retrofitting on similar
systems with HOV or VERSO
housings already installed, through
a simple change to the base and
internal electronics. This allows
the conversion to a digital system,
optimising installation times and
thus reducing costs and environ-
mental impact.
